There is a beautiful Hotel in the middle of Mount Hope I've heard called "Mountaineer Hotel", however, under this name, I can find no historical data about it. Was "Mountaineer Hotel" the actual name of the business or is that a nick name it gotten over the years? And, how would I get in touch with the owner?

Any help would be great!!!

Thanks

Look for the mess he's left surrounding the building as the demolishion continues at the back section of the building with perhaps the presence of airborne asbestos.... I don't know his name and I'm not trying to be rude but the truth is the truth. The guy lives in the Hotel, you can probably catch him there....Also , he's scheduled a haunted house at Mountainair Hotel. It was once named the Mount Hope Hotel and the name was later changed to the Mountainair Hotel , owned and operated by New River Coal Company before and after the names change... Not Mountaineer....Hope my comments were helpful and thank for letting me vent.....

Don't worry about the asbestos at the Mountainair Hotel because the mayor makes his own laws......Exempt if you voted for him !!!!!!

To bad your IQ's are in the low 70's there is no asbestos any where around here, and come by and vent to me personally anytime. I live in the old New River Hotel, AKA Mountainair

I see someone who went belly up and lost everything he had and ended up back here living out of a run down hotel of what use to look halfway decent until you moved in and now well...just look out your front door and see for yourself. I think everyone knows where you live just go through town and see what looks like a landfill and knock at the door right?? IQ's in the low 70's...may I ask what you do for a living? Uuuummm ol I forget we got the big haunted house coming up...takes alot of college degrees to pull that off huh??

Once again your cussing shows your level of intelligence...you have none!! You can get your point across without all the profanity....not necessary!! A home my parents willed me....you have obviously let to much of the demolition dust get to you...but its okay...I'll say a prayer for ya cause at this point thats the only thing that can help you is a little bit of Jesus!! Everyone has different views and different opinions on alot of situations....but it all boils down to trying to make the town a better place. If you put as much energy into doing that as you do your one sentence responses...maybe we could get somewhere!!

This kind of lanquage by Potter is exactly what makes Mount Hope a desirable place not to live and continues to drive down property values. His lanquage sounds like that of the Chief of Police in Mount Hope.....Seems like the Chief has been an effective role model, now the citizens are calling other citizens out in the street, yes, just like the chief did to George Smith....What going to happen when someone takes you up on the offer? Also did you purchase a demolition permit and have an inspection by Mount Hopes Building inspector?

WARNING: All visitors planning to tour the Haunted Hotel are advised to wear safety glasses, steel toe boots and a MSHA approved hard hat to avoid injury from falling objects during the tour. Don't press your luck, show up in a coal miner costume.

Wrong again there Mr. Potter not Lloyd or Dave thats what you get for thinking the last time you thought you should have learned your lesson. The last thing I heard that you were THINKING of turning the hotel into a bed and breakfast..and you was wrong about that too!! And you obviously THINK you are a major contributer to the city by running a haunted house....well I'll tell you, you THOUGHT wrong again...the town is scary enough with the current administration we have running the town!! But thanks for your efforts anyways!!

I think the Mayors ofice should be located in the Mountaineer Hotel. Invite all his cronies over and you can call it the Broke Back Mountaineer Hotel.

Where is Potter? Last week he was flapping his jaws about kicking someones butt and now he's disappeared. My guess is he's crying to the Mayor because someone called his bluff. I wish he could get the Mayor to help him clean up that damn eye sore he's living in. You would think he would have a little pride in his home and his town. Wait, I forgot the "Mayors" town. What a show Mt. Hope and it's big shot "wannabes" put on for the rest of the citizens. Oh well in five years most of them will have gone to collect their reward.

Mr. Potter the anger management problem is not going to help you at all so calm down.....For your information a carcinogen is a substance that is capable of causing cancer in humans or animals. Some commonly known carcigens include asbestos, radon, certain pesticides & tabacco smoke thus making it a high probability that the rat infested or once rat infested, historical memory known as the "Mountainair Hotel" probably has some know carcinogens lurking in & around the remaining structure. Whether it be asbestos or the treatment of rodents in the past. Not to mention low percentages of asbestos that was used in the plaster mix in that era!!! All I'm saying, it would be in your best interest to at least use a respirator during the demolition for your own safety even if the City Building Inspector/ City doesn't require you to do so. It's not been determined what level of exposure to asbestos or a carcinogen that triggers cancer.... So, Good luck regarding the demolition whether there's a presence of asbestos or not.

Just found this forum... and to comment to what I have read....Don't think just the mountaineer is scary!!! I just had the misfortune of visiting what was a childhood dream place to find a washed up garbage dump from one end of town to the other. As I turned on West Virginia for the first time in 3 years and it was like I had turned down the back alley of some slums or crack town. The garbage and filth was just unbelieveable!!! Like I said I haven't been there since my grandmother had died (and she would spin in her grave to see what has become of her beautiful home and yard!!!), but if this is what your mayor has let your beautiful historic town become EVERYONE NEEDS TO WORK ON GIVING HIM THE BOOT( maybe you can find a old miner's boot in the antique shop) I truely pray for the residents of Mount Hope, because I know that street is a place where I would never alow my grandmother to resede today.

I had the pleasure of John allowing a group of mine a tour through this facility in June 08'.

I found John and his family to be kind. The facility itself is showing signs of improvement. The inside is coming along slowly, however, is improving.

The facility itself is beautiful. I understand the back section of the hotel is all but condemned and awaiting demolition, however, my understanding is John has owned this facility for approx. 5-10 yrs? The deterioration of this building was not accomplished in this short time frame.

The Mountainair is a beautiful place with immeasurable potential at this point.

I like Mt. Hope. It would do the economy good to support John in the restoration of the Hotel. It's got a rich history, just about any time period of Mt. Hope and Fayette Co., can be traced through the Mountainair, it sits on or near the very first hotel/boarding house in Fayette Co., and in actuality one might consider it and Mt. Hope to be the first tourist destination in Fayette Co.

Again, I enjoyed meeting him and his family. I love that Hotel, it has great potential for that community. And, quite frankly the place has some paranormal activity... That community pulls together, supports the effort, many people will come to stay there... which, translates into spending money in that community.. not bad.

My appreciation to the Potters..

Daily Horoscope for March 21

Taurus

You should have plenty of energy as a lively mood prevails today. The changing Moon enters your second house of finances, giving some Bulls the itch to go on a shopping spree. If you think spending money on status symbol items will make others think more highly of you, save your cash. It may be tempting to try to keep up with the Jones's, but in the end it is who you are and not what you have that will impress others.
