Has anyone seen this place? Oh wait you can't behind the overgrowth of wild plants taking over the place. It is barely visible from the lake now. Maybe that is a good thing? This place is just disgraceful and it saddens me to see it fall apart piece by piece. Why has BS let this place sit here for so long in the hands of someone who obviously only wants it for the insurance? South Middleton Township wants to create a 4 million dollar new township building. For what? What have they done?? Why don't they put that money towards beautifying BS and other cities? I have written to them several times asking them how long they intended to let the place go, but i have never gotten a reply. Does anyone else find the appalling state of one of BS's oldest mansions sickening?

I completely agree. I was just there today and was devasted. I am distantly related to the Buchers that lived there years ago. Many years ago it was trashed by college students who lived there and I was so thrilled when someone bought a few years ago and turned it into Swan House. Imagine my disappointment today when I saw it deserted and reverting to its state of disrepair. It's too sad. I completely agree that someone has to do something!

My kids played on the lawn, rolling down it n laughing....my dghter wanted to move in it! I got the courage to look into the doors windows...Furniture ust sitting there...dust everywhere n a broken window on the 3rd floor with birds going in and out1 The township needs to have a fundraiser and take this place back!!! It shldnt hve been sold in the 1st place. It's a historical site. Would be great to tour n charge a $10.00 fee!! I wld def. tour it!!! Sooo sad!! I felt as if this home was crying out for help!

the owner of Swan Lake Mansion owns two homes in a nice neighborhood in Urbana that he has allowed to decay for the last 30 years. One was never inhabited - though it is now - by oppossums, raccons, woodchucks ,etc. The other has had residents, but is now unihabitable and falling apart. f Since taxes are paid, nothing is done about.
Good luck getting your situation solved. You may be able to push the historic building button to get action.

I go to Boiling Springs a few times a month, and I agree that the Bucher-Ege mansion is a sad situation.

The Pennsylvania State (public) tax assessment database shows the owner to be a Henri Merkelo, who purchased it 4/27/2000 for 460k.

I can see why anyone would fall in love with this Grand Dame, and want to bring her back to her previous splendor...but what in the world could have happened?

To see the old mansion house in it's glory, complete with the chicken house that used to be behind it, see route 66 television show Burning for Burning, episode 43. It was filmed in 1961 at the mansion and Bucher apartments down the block. View photos then and now at www.ohio66.com

My wife and I were just there 9/29/13. It is sad to see. How can they let this glorious historic mansion just fall apart? It feels like the home is crying for help.

Can someone explain to me why someone would buy a beautiful property like Swan Lake and just let it rot in place? Seriously, I truly do not comprehend this. I understand that the owner has other properties that he does nothing with as well. What is his motivation? What has he to gain from it? I am sooo thoroughly perplexed by this. Help.

I grew up in BS, and walked past the mansion all the time. My husband loves that house and believes it could be a beautiful bed and breakfast, and a great place for a wedding and outdoor reception. Unfortunately, we can not afford it. It needs a lot of repair and TLC. If the right person would invest the time and money into it, the mansion would be beautiful again

This home is a family heirloom. Who do I contact in Cumberland County Pennsylvania in order to restore it? How do I go about ownership and involve a local historic society?

That dump is sooooo ghetto. I heard that it's now a crack house for hikers on the Appalachian Trail.

good news...Talked with a person who knows Henri and has assured me that he is indeed beginning to fix the Swan up slowly. The third floor that was leaking rain into the mansion is all but done, and they are working their way down from there. No time estimate for completion.....please save the Swan!

oh that's great! I have been so worried about that 3rd floor! I was sure racoons had taken over. Pass along to Henri that local volunteers would likely be available to pitch in.

I really hope this is true! The Mansion seems to be really hit hard on the upper floors. Just there last weekend. I often worry about the roof, those third floor tiny windows that appear to be w/o glass...

Hi there. I want to get in touch with Henri. Do you know how I could reach him? I am the founding member of a local metal detecting group and I am DYING to metal detect that house. I wouldn't bother the house, of course.
