I was on Belmont's Topix and someone started a discussion about what they like and miss about their town. Let's give it a try for Mt. Holly.

Somebody else go first, it's taking me a while to collect my thoughts.

Come on someone has to have something positive to say. I'll tell you what I miss in Mt. Holly

1. The old movie theatre.
2. The soda fountains at Summey's and Holland's drug stores.
3. MH used to rock some Christmas Parades.
4. Jones Brothers grocery store.
5. Paul Derr's clothing store.
6. Hardees
7. Wider streets

What I like about Mt. Holly

1. The personal and small town service of Charlie's Drug Store.
2. The public library, although it's small they do a good job there.

I miss Jones Brothers the most. The thing I dislike most about our town is that we have arrogant leaders who want the town to be something it will never be. I also hate all the trashy bars we have downtown.

Another vote from me for
1. Summey's and Charlie's (too young for Holland's)
2. Hardees
3. Jones Bro.
4. The Leader
5. City Hall being downtown
6. Park N Shop

What I like about MH now (or what I think has improved about MH)
1. Tuckaseegee Park. I waited all my life for that place to be more than "The Three Fields". When I ride through on my bike I'm very proud of it. I think the city got that one right.

I love Tuck Park too! The city really messed up getting rid of Tina Pritchard. She headed that park project up and was a real go getter. I believe she would have done a better job keeping it up and adding additional features too. But, on the bright side...I do enjoy that park.

I like Mount Holly because they are trying their best in keeping us from becoming like Belmont.I dont want the bars that Belmont has and I like my water bills. That is enough to make me happy.

I love how friendly folks are here.

I also love all the folks who are volunteering around the city to help bring some neat things to our town for families.

I like the schools. People who've never been anywhere else may complain but those of us who have lived elsewhere know what a gem all of our schools are.

I am not old by any means, however, I do remember Hollands as a child and it was a wonderful place, they had the weighing scales just like the one that Charlies Drug still has went you walked in the door. It was a great place that had black and white checkered tile. For me, it was the best place to buy a cone of ice cream and buy a comic book. I am just old enough to remember some of the great stores we used to have such as the Ice plant where you could buy the coldest water melons. I remember going uptown to get by haircut by Jack Warren, one of several barber shops that we used to have. I remember buying a toy robot at Western Auto that was run by "Red Lawing". I remember taking bottles to Jones for the deposit money. I remember having to go to Massey Hardware for batteries. I don't remember the theatres as they were gone by that time. I do remember when Hardees was first built and the excitement that created. Drving throught town now, it is sad. Our Main Street at night is so dark and deserted. Quite a change since the 70's.

What a great post. I'm pretty sure I'm older than you, but I remember the theater and the first movie I ever saw there was "Jungle Book." Got a little older and went to see "Love Story" and my older sister and her best friend started crying before the movie ever started because they had heard it was sad.

I remember Grier's Dry Cleaners, Rhyne's Shoe Store and the Five and Dime. I wasn't old enough, but I remember my older siblings being able to attend dances at the Jaycee Building and how there was always some big story to tell when they came home.

I miss being able to pay my power bill downtown and I totally agree with you that it's sad that our town is dark and deserted and is nothing more than a pass through town.

There's nothing wrong with being from a small town or living in one, we just need to get some business back.

And the fun we used to have in the Jaycee Building on Halloween.

The best thing was that they got rid of Tina Pritchard. Hell she was stealing the place blind. The park is a wonderful place. When the JC"S had it,they had good plans, but all fell through. Two many drunks, and parties with the money.

Because our City Manager, that's you Mr. Jackson, hires a landscaping firm that might hire illegal alliens for over $100,000 dollars. He is so good to be providing for the owners of RDS and his employess.

Because our Mayor gave away one million of our tax dollars to the White Water Park..........what a guy.

I used to like how I could pay my MH water bill and the people taking the money wouldn't lose my check and force me to cancel the check and start a bank draft in order for the clerk's inadequacies to disappear.

Those were the days.

The best thing about MT Holly is their support of their youth and their programs, which unlike Collins is proactive not reactive. Try saying something positive Collins instead of your hateful hindsight and sarcasm.

This is just like you to see everything as self serving. This is about you and the belittling of posters on a thread you find below your standards. Quit being a jerk!!!!

I love all the girls at EG during the 80's from Mt Holly. Oh yeah
