Mayor Whitt recently went to Charlie's Drug store and made a statement to a few patrons that he wants to close the Catawba Heights Fire Station. Now, this is very disturbing to me. If my house catches fire or I am having a heart attack, I DO NOT want to wait for a firetruck to come from N. Main st or who knows where else. He is obviously against the existence of the Catawba Heights fire station after he pulled his puppets together a few months ago and voted down the acceptance of a FEMA grant that would have put firefighters in the Catawba Heights station that is already severely understaffed. Us as taxpayers of this city deserve the same protection as someone who lives in the downtown area. We are no different. If this Station is closed, the commercial insurance rates will definately go higher and the city is trying to promote commercial growth on the "Gateway" coming in on 273 from I-85? Just plain stupid. Our safety is at risk here and we need to show our so called city leaders that we want that Station to continue to exist.

You make a good point, but you are making it in the wrong place. You should take this issue to the next Council Meeting and/or write an editorial to the Gazette. It needs to be public information and this website is nothing better than the National Enquirer local edition. It's not a credible source and not widely viewed.

I agree with you 100%

I know that there are a several of council members that live in Catawba Heights or very, very close. I would hope that they would speake up for their "people".

But please do not take this for granted and we all can voice the opinion as stated in previous post.

I agree with Mayor Whitt. Catawba Heights spend too much time attending fender benders on 85. When they arrive, theres already 3 fire trucks , 3 ambulances,5 patrol cars and a partridge in a pear tree! L.A is going to have to cough up 1.5 million in overtime to cover Michael Jacksons overkill. Emergency services should not be allowed to hold life threating circumstances over the taxpayers head, just to justify their overtime. Let an auditor look at past calls and decide. We can always do like Belmont. Dont cut cost, just raise everybodys water bill through the roof! Lets hope not.

I will be honest with you. I would like to see all the help I could get for me and my family. You be honest to me! How many emergency workers use taxpayers money like a bar of soap, just to get overtime pay.

Catawba Heights doesn't respond to I-85. Remember it is better to appear stupid than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

CHFD is stragedically located to respond to fires in MH or Belmont. Closing it would be a mistake. It's a service to the citizens it serves and one that should not be taken away. The citizens of CH worked very hard to establish that fire dept. and it's presence there is not only a legacy to the founders but also a benefit to all citizens in the district that it serves.

If the Mayor wanted to cut the fat, he missed his chance with the new City Hall "Taj mahal". Please don't cut public safety benefits to help supplement budget deficits due to negligent over spending by the City.

Keep in mind, in the case of a fire minutes can make a difference between life & death!

Just to let you know..Catawba heights does not attend fender benders on 85 because 85 is in belmonts fire district.. you might want to look at the gaston county fire district mar.

Catawba Heights has mostly Belmont addresses and the residents there say they live in Belmont. So let Belmont pay for it or close it, plain and simple. Those people want to hold onto Belmont identity but let Mount Holly foot the bill.

We have Belmont addresses because the damm
government want change them. I don't tell anyone that I live in Belmont,I live in Catawba Hgts. a section of Mt Holly, just like Tuckagesse is a section of MH! They should close the station at the Duke Power Dam---it's not used and got a old Fire Truck that will not run.Who would ans. fire calls in Catawba Hgts? Community hell all they want is to save the chimney or stand in the middle of the road with a boot and beg for monies.

who cares where the money comes from as long as these guys are saving our lives i don't live in that district i live in east gaston area but you people who want to shut this station down are crazy. The job that these men do over there is far more important than any of you could ever dream of and if we can throw money away on a stupid new bridge to go across some water or better yet on a white water center for charlotte that lets be honest most of us will never go to because you pay out the butt to get into or spend money on a big ol building with a few offices and a lot of empty space called city hall or the many other waste of money that mt holly loves to do than keeping this station open is just one way to put there money to good use. And the fire station serves the mt holly area a great deal other wise it would have never been put there years ago. As for Mr. Whytt have we forgotten he is not Mayor anymore so what he wants does not matter. I recall mr whytt running that mouth about 2 years ago in a local restaurant about how our police officers and our fire men waste tax payers money. But i am guessing it is only ok to waste it if you hold the title mayor. It don't matter if you fight everyday to save lives. I feel very blessed to have fireman and police serving for us so what ever they need we should do our best as a city to make it possible for them to do our jobs and remember that is you or your family need help your not going to call city council or the X MAYOR to save you. NO you will call the fire department or police. So keep this in mind. By the way I pay taxes to and I will fight like crazy to help keep this station open no matter what the cost...........

I don't want them to close Catawba Hgts Fire Dept. I just want them to stop using the trucks for taxis.Them and the main station use them to run errans. These trucks use a lot of fuel, and they have a car that the city furnishes to do this.Another thing why do they send two to three trucks to a accident?

Where in the world did you get the idea that the fire dept. uses their trucks for taxis and running errands? The times they eat out or go to the grocery store to provide for meals at their long hrs. at the station they take the trucks with them so they are always ready to respond to a fire or emergency at your house or mine! Goodness gracious. Talk to these firefighters and police officers and see how hard their jobs are and what all they do for us. The picking about each and every teeny thing in this town is incredible. Pick your battles....

I believe if you check the other forums on here Mr. Old Fart has a lot to say. Yesterday, by the end of the day he and I finally agreed on some information I had provided that I thought would be good for some of our citizens in Mt. Holly. I take care of my father a good bit and he's older than Mr. Old Fart by about 7-8 years, but this is just how they view things. Plus, I think he likes the socialization on this site whether it's negative or not and everything he says isn't wrong, it's just the way he sees things and I don't want to minimize his opinion anymore than I do the next person. I know there are a lot of seniors that have no one to look after them but themselves and they get a little defensive by what they perceive to be wrong doing. Know what I mean?
