Being a non profit I was strolling thru AYF's public 2009 income tax 990 statement the other day.
AYF National Headquarters = Joe Galat's whitepages.com home address = 1000 S Pointe Dr,
Miami Beach, FL 33139. Looks like a residential condo not an office. Income tax has rent paid to Joe of $45K. Add in auto leases and loan expenses to officers, salaried family members - AYF does not pass the smell test for me. Check it out its public information and an eye opener.

What is the difference between AYF and UYFL? This is my sons first year in UYFL, we visited a AYF team for his age and they were all smaller, might have just been that team. Any history on UYFL anyone can give and comparisons????

Pop warner is better and more challaenging than all football. Not as big but they are african american and very atgletic, plays are more complex and everything is better. Our team has been top 16 in nation for past 2 years.

I have coached and have had kids play in both leagues and this is my recommendation to parents. Put your child where the best fundamental coaching is at the time. The structure of AYF is up to par in places that have been running it for a few years like anything else it takes committed volunteers. I will say that having made it to both the national championships pw and ayf, ayf is much less expensive and you have more options with where you stay. But you get what you pay for the actual field and experience is no comparison. PW has it hands down... the kids feel like it is something special at Disney it has that WOW factor (along with the WOW price tag) As for size kids grow and change and positions may change the bigger you are the closer you are to the ball the smaller the farther away db wr... I think both leagues should prep your son to play high school ball with the right coach. It is really going to depend on the local leaders in place that will make the difference between the two. Regarding weights AYF has unlimited or American and national. At the end of the season for national the weights are the exact same with pw getting 1 pound per week for 9 weeks. I do think getting the weight at the beginning of the season is better but in both leagues kids work to cut weight and sometimes it is a good thing and other times the kids and parents should think about playing up. I do think that a 3 year gap is too much because many of these kids are first timers at 8 - 14 going against kids that may have been playing for 5 or 6 seasons and there is definitely a difference between hunters and grazers. That is why as a parent it is extremely important you do some homework on the make up of the team. Is this team competing to go to FL every year or just starting out.... Also I tell parents never put your son or daughter in as the youngest or lightest if possible... there are always those few exceptions that are just born beasts but it takes time so set realistic expectations... Believe me there are many rides home I wish I could take back a few conversations... live and learn. Also one other thing if your child has been doing great in flag football youth contact is completely different. Hope this helps and again find a coach that will teach your son the proper technique and he will be ahead of the game.

I have read every post. The majority is exactly what you experience in youth football. Parents & Coaches trash talking. Young players being developed is what youth football is about. PW is all about restrictions, must have certain number (usually 18) cannot have a team, if you don't have 16 players who make weight, you forfeit. Got to weigh less than 160lbs 12-14yr old, less than 140lbs-15 yr olds. My son is 13, 5' 11" 180 and growing. We do not have middle school ball in our area, so kids who weigh over 160 at certification cannot play. Why??? This is why we chose AYF. Young players are being discriminated against with these weight limits. You can say what you want about safety. Football is a physical, violent game and players will get hurt (weight does not matter). In HS, College, NFL there are players of all different sizes. Players need to compete under normal circumstances like they will at the higher levels. AYF gives every kid a chance to play not just those kids who are under a certain weight. If you are a parent who cannot accept that your son will play against someone bigger and stronger then football is not the sport for your son. I need someone to logically explain to me why weight restrictions are needed in football. There will be great players come from PW & AYF, but again why do organizations like PW feel the need to discriminate against kids according to weight.

Basically, both are a business. Don't pay any registration fees and see how far you go...in as season and as an organization.

It makes me laugh when I hear people say " X is about the money..not about the kids". Realistically, don't bring a paycheck home to your family and see how much you can take care of your kids. A strong business and financial structure and mindset is needed for the success of any organization.

This doesn't make any league a bad league.

The problems come in with the 'saboteurs' in a league that secede from your organization with your parents, kids and coaches...many times luring them away with false promises and 'pie in the sky' expectations.

That is what gives youth football, teaching and structure wise a bad name.

Carefully select and screen out those in your program. Don't be so eager to dish out the 'coaching' title too fast. Make them volunteers for an extended period (1 to 2 seasons) before you give them any position of responsibility within your football family.

Lastly, don't get friends or associates to manage ANY finances. Establish a Board of sound financial individuals that can cross check each other on any financial issues.

It is impossible to say one is better than the other. I think AYF is better, but if you don't live in my town, you may have a totally different experience. It is all about your son. When your son starts out, let him play where his friends play. For 99% of the kids out there, sports is a way to build relationships and grow as a person. If your kid is in the 1%, it will become obvious pretty quickly. If he is, and his team is not competitive, find him a better team.. Pop warner/AYF/UYF all play real football. Most house leagues change the game with rules that teach bad habits. If your son is big, UYF or AYF is your best bet. If he is smaller, Pop Warner would be a nice option too. Big kids get a raw deal in pop warner, because the have to play older kids. Age beats weight every time. Ultimately, find a team that has coaches that are knowledgeable of the game and have a temperament you can deal with. If you don't want someone yelling at your kid, don't deal with a coach that is a yeller. If your son needs a kick in the butt, don't go with a softy. At the end of the day, whatever you chose will be just fine.

This league is great because they allow all kids the opportunity to play the game of football.

Yes you can have to pay more but I live in Mount Holly and had to go to Charlotte because it is all about who you know in the Mount Holly league. Lived in Mount Holly all my life and played sports for Mount Holly and can't wait to get my kids out of the sports in this town. I'm not prejudice but if you ain't black you will be on the bench most of the time. Trust me just ride by the field you will see who is running the show.

Really? Of all the racism that takes place in Mt Holly you have the gall to sit here crying about Black people and football? What do you propose the Black children do? You want them to sit the bench or go back to the cotton field so only whites can play ball with no Blacks? You tried to preface your ignorance with "I'm not prejudice" then proceeded to say some prejudice nonsense. Sorry to tell you but you sound like a racist redneck who's upset because their child doesn't have the position you think they should have. They're children for Christ's sake. What is wrong with you Mt Holly and Stanley people when it comes to football?!!

Why bring Stanley in to it. You all can come play there and it is free. Stay on that soap box instead of doing something

I brought Stanley into it because they have some racial issues too. I'm not here to bash anybody but let's be realistic and honest about race relations in Gaston County. Stanley doesn't use Black quarterbacks and their children call non-white children racial names. I don't do the arguing thing, especially when it comes to children so I'll leave it there. I just simply wanted to speak on the ignorance and keep it honest. Having said that, you have a nice day.

I guess if I bring up the fact one of your coaches has a thing for having the children bully and fight each other is not credible too. Never mind the fact he can't coach pop warner anymore right? Or the fact that you all cheat your parents on fundraisers and those Disney trips, what about that? Please don't try to discredit that cause pop warner proved otherwise. That is all. I will no longer respond to you or your twisted arrogance ever again because you are a hateful soul and not worthy of my attention. Your character is trash and you prove that notion right with every post.
