This has got to the biggest joke I have seen come out of our town. This is a program to encourage visits to our downtown. It is fashioned after a similar program in Amsterdam in Holland. If I was at a hotel and given one of these passes and took the time and gas money to drive out of way to drive into our downtown, I would be so angry. First of all I would think it was a joke. There is no post office down town, no grocery store, no hardware store, no places to eat or shop. You have to drive to Belomont to eat and I am sure that everyone will agree with that. I live in Mount Holly and there is no reason to visit downtown Mount Holly anymore.

My family thought the same thing. Read the opinion page of The Gazette today. The editor of that paper has obviously never been to MH. Wonder if VCR repair is discounted?

So have you not been downtown lately? For a small town, we have a country store, coffee shop, three boutiques (She Boutique, Jolie Boutique, Chic Boutique), three gift shops, an local art gallery, and a bakery. What we lack is restaurants, but Vaseillios is good and a new restaurant is moving in on N Main. Some folks like small town Southern Charm and Mount Holly has that...We would have a lot more to offer if folks like the ones who post here really cared and supported our local businesses. Don't fault folks for trying to bring in money to support this town...an increase in sales tax could possibly lower our property taxes...but I guess most folks don't understand that. Go, visit, and support your Mount Holly Businesses!

Here is reality:

1. MOST businesses spots downtown are banks, churches, insurance, and abandoned businesses. Not a big draw for entertainment.

2. The businesses you name are mediocre at best.

3. There is a street, railroad tracks, and a highway that you have to cross to get to half the shops in Mount Holly. Who really feels safe crossing Highway 27 where the official speed limit is 35 but cars are consistently traveling in excess of 50mph?

4. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that an increase in tax revenue will cure all ills. You get much more impact by the city reducing spending than increasing tax revenue.

there is no “anchor” store. There is nothing in downtown that will keep me coming back. I do want to support MH and its downtown. My husband and I went to the coffee shop a couple of weeks ago. He got an iced coffee. Instead of getting in the car and going home we decided to walk, with wallet in hand, to check the other stores out. There was only one store open and it was the country store. This was a Saturday afternoon.

It seems like a simple equation to me. MH needs a good chef-owned (not cook) restaurant with new menu items ever so often, a good beer/wine list, and most importantly consistently good food.(If the restaurant has good food the people who don’t drink alcohol will support such a restaurant.) Another idea would be something like Whole Foods. People from all over Gaston County would come to our little town for that.

The only time I come to town is when one of my kids needs cash from the ATM. And when I am on that mission I have no time to stop by the boutiques or the bakery.

One more thing, I thought “I am Mount Holly,” was only for the out of town guests. Seems to me that you really don’t want me downtown anyway.

A Whole Foods in Mount Holly? Are you joking? Are you for real? The only place that can even entertain that thought is areas like Southpark which just got one. The demographics in Mount Holly and for that matter all of Gaston County are not what upscale grocery stores are looking for. We are lucky that Food Lion even wants to do business in our town. Why do you think Harris Teeter left Gaston County?

Kidding. Ok, I get it you wouldn’t go to Whole Foods but I would. And I am sure there are a few other people in Gaston County that would go to such a store. I have been in Healthy Home Market in Huntersville (locally owned store) and seen a couple of Gaston County people shopping in there.
So let me guess what “used to be downtown,” that you would go to… was it Jones’ Brothers? Probably, and I bet you went down there for the local eggs and the butcher-cut meat. That’s why people go to a Whole Foods or a Healthy Home Market. That’s the draw of those stores. You go in there and you know exactly where you food comes from.
I was just stating the obvious that there is nothing downtown to make people want to go back. It seems that you agree with me on that. I guess your reply to me was a baited one. So, you got me.
For the record Whole Foods is an organic food market that sells natural and organic food, not an upscale big box grocery store. Healthy Home Market is the same type of store but on a smaller scale and is locally owned.

It's private. Caromont is leasing the space but a private co op is running it. Caromont leased all that space and has plans for all of it.

In a building paid for by the sweat of the citizens. If the venture was worth taking on privately, then a private building would be used. That's how you can tell a government handout from a legitimate business. In this case, the citizens assume all the risk.

Is it this easy to diagnose the obvious or am I just this intelligent?

Driving to Charlotte is big deal for me to shop at Whole Foods (which I haven't yet). I do shop at Harris Teeter and always hoped one would come to town. I do not like the changes at Food Lion and have found myself not even going there much anymore. Food Lion has turned into a convenience store that caters to the blue collar beer drinking crowd.

Just buy your food at City Hall and be thankful you are allowed to live in Mt. Holly. And, you must get your healthcare across the street at the new ER. And, you must eat dinner at the two Main Street restaurants despite your gag reflex. And, don't forget to get your VCR tuned up downtown. And, you are obligated to picnic in the fenced in area across the street from the car wash and junk car viewing area.

Please don't anger the City Hall gods.

Wondering, good. You are catching on. It's all about money. More than likely, the $4500/month in rent Caromont will pay ends up being a losing proposition for them. The real prize is the ER to be built across the street. Nothing like a $4500/month contribution to influence Mt. Holly's decision.

Again, is it this easy to see this stuff or am I just incredibly smart?

So the tax payers of Mount Holly paid for the Citizens Center and now the people that run the farmer's market are going to make some money off the taxpayer?
Just typical of Mount Holly.
