How come no one ever calls in the Mount Holly Optimist football scores to the Gazette? I'd like to see my son's touchdowns recorded in the Gazette so we can look at it together when he is older. Is this another situation of mismanagement described by "Football Parent" in previous posts?

Anyone can call in the scores. However, if I am not mistaken, you have to write the article yourself. As hard as our boys have worked this year, they absolutely deserve to see their name and accomplishments published in the paper. If you haven't already noticed, all of the optimist club "officers" are soooooo <eyeroll> busy because they just can't get any help from the parents...blah blah blah. Anyway, I believe anyone can write the article and send it in.

I think that we as adults and parents of these children should stop the bickering, grow up and teach our kids good sportmanship. It is easy to point fingers instead of seeing our own faults.

Who's bickering, concerned? The person was just asking about calling in scores to the newspaper for heaven's sake. And, stop whining!

Dear Mount Holly Native,

Thank you for being down-to-Earth and logical. Sometimes, the truth is a bitter pill to swallow.

I'm a Mt. Holly native, too. Lived here most of my life.

Putting scores in the newspaper is something that used to always be done. I have clippings from a lot of my old players. It's a nice keepsake. The thing we always used to do is find parents or coaches on a week to week basis to call in the scores and other information. Sometimes one parent or coach would do it all the time. Sometimes it was a shared task. Anyone can call them in.

Yes I noticed on five to six occaisions when my son scored and had an outstanding game, it would just happen that that would be the day "someone" wouldn't call in the scores at all. I wasn't aware anyone could call in the scores. Not from Mount Holly.

For the sake of putting this to rest, I'll suggest to the Optimist Club to make it a strong point of emphasis that each team assign someone who will be willing to keep in-game stats and call them in to the paper each week. We could break it down where one person keeps the stats, then another person calls them in, just so the "load" can be shared.

The winning team's head coach is usually the one who calls in the scores. Maybe you could volunteer to help with that ?? If you don't win... dont expect for the opposing team to put your kids name in the paper.

I think the Optimist Club should poll their members to see who has real management experience dealing with people, problems, budgets, and continuous improvement. Let that person lead the organization by the process of delegation. Let me answer the pessimists in the group by suggesting that parental participation is not an option. You want little Johnny to play? Well then you better be prepared to actively serve on a committee and contribute positively. If someone decides to buck the system and not participate despite signing a pledge to help, then little Johnny will be barred from practice and games until Mommy/Daddy/baby-daddy decides they want to be an adult and live up to their obligation.

I agree with you in theory, but do we really want to punish the kid for having bad parents. This comes up all the time and in the end who really suffers?

I agree blue devil! Punks plan sounds good, but it is not fair to the kids!

We have kids who parents see us as "babysitters" and just drop them off ALL DAY for the games with no money or a change of clothes after they play!

The concessions is a lot of hard work on part of the hosting team! Parents need to step up & work!

The problems these days result from the parents who could care less what their kids are doing or the type of crowds they associate with!

A suggestion for the Mt. Holly organization, maybe the team mom could coordinate these reports.

The team mom could draft a "generic" article and then after the game fill the blanks with the score and the players who stood out, but give encouragement to all the kids!

They could call ahead and check on deadlines for getting the scores in, etc.

Unfortunately, under my plan, the child would be considered guilty by association. The truth is that, in life, children are directly impacted by a parent's decisions. As Optimist members, we are not going to be able to change the consequences of human behavior. Good behavior is rewarded and bad behavior is punished. If our prison system worked with the same logic, we would have fewer repeat offenders and crime because illegal activity would not go unpunished. Let me know if you want me to lead your organization and I'll give Ron Tench a call and ask for his resignation.

This is still the US of A correct. If so then you are not held accountable for the sins of your parents. I for one will not be party to punishing kids for having bad parents. You would be better off to charge a couple hundred dollars for each kid and then hire someone to work the games.
