WOW! The link at the bottom of this story is awesome! It is an audio story. you don't have to read a thing, just sit back and listen.

Actually, there are two stories. The first is about an 11 year old boy who has to make adult decisions under very dangerous circumstance.

The second and longer story is on James Spring. Both are just terrific! You may want to find the main website and bookmark it.

Thanks, Santa Cruz Sentinel!!

...I caught this story in my car Saturday and sat in the grocery store parking lot and just cried my eyes out. Mr. Spring is an amazing man and storyteller. There are and always will be so many more sides to a story that is so distilled in the media and sensationalized to sell newspapers....

This story was riveting. And now I want to know why the Vianna's grandparents have not made the effort to thank him for what he did.

Glad the two kids are home with their grandparents and an total stranger taking who took the chance to retreive them from their parents. I can't say enough about Ira Glass's show 'This American Life' which can be found on National Public Radio. Loved the one on garbage recycling in Mexico.

This was a well told story. Unfortunately, it is only a small part of the story.

James Spring was thanked for those gifts, by me, the day they arrived. I am Viana's uncle.

James Spring was mailed pictures of the kids opening those presents, by Viana's grandmother - and thanked again.

James Spring got an update on the kids the day after Christmas, to which he responded gratefully.

For some reason, he decided to tell this story - a compelling tale - and cast the family in a bad light...a family that stepped up to give these two girls a wonderful life.

We are very grateful to James for finding these girls and bringing them home....but disappointed that he told the story this way without contacting us first....

I can only hope that he told this story, this way, because he just didn't know better...

James is an amazing storyteller and was regarded as a hero to both Leonard Hoskins Family (the murder victim) as well as Viana's family. I was close to Leonard and a witness at the first trial. During that nightmare, Viana's Family came to support Leonard's family and were instrumental in convincing the DA to retry the case. We had conversations about our Hero Mr Spring. We all wanted to talk with him, We were all so incredibly grateful- beyond words- for what he had done. But at that time, I got the sense- we all did- that he just wanted to resume his life with his family & did not want to be called a hero. We were just trying to respect your privacy Mr Spring. Carelli has ruined so many lives and Michelle has stood by her man through it all. It's clear she loves her children but she chose her path. The authorities were useless during the investigation and because of Spring Viana and Faith are in a wonderful, loving, & stable home. It's really a shame that they've been cast in a negative light after their ordeal. They are kind, honest people who work for a living and there is nothing they wouldn't do for their girls.

This is such a sad and tragic story. Those parents absolutely loved those kids. They made some really bad decisions and I'm sure at some point drugs played their nasty role in the whole sordid affair. The media has certainly portrayed Michelle Pinkerton and even Carelli as dangerous meth addicted people but the portrait you get from James Spring is quite the opposite. Viana clearly loved her parents very much and there was a great deal of affection and warmth and caring from her parents despite their circumstances. I hope that Michelle Pinkerton's family supports her and helps her through this difficult time and I hope that eventually, she can be reunited with her children and move past this terrible part of her life. I think she deserves a chance to redeem herself.

bystander have you no respect for the deceased? Leonard was a kind and brilliant man, a software engineer and collector of classic cars. Carelli testified that his victim had been trying to help him. For you to post a link like that shows how much of a gullible idiot you are. Mr Spring is a gifted storyteller~ the key word being "story". As someone close to the victim who is well acquainted with Viana's Family, Mr. Spring's story includes a few discrepancies with regard to the facts~ He presents his story and his perspective and no where did I see or hear it stated that the story is factual. I can also say that Carelli was a thief who would take advantage of people and I saw first hand how volatile & explosive he was towards Pinkerton screaming in her face while cradling thier infant and driving erratically when angry with his family in the car.

I was heart broken by Mr Spring Story, but I realize that also abusive parents 'love' their kids. That doesnt change the fact that Vienna and her sister would probably become violent and addicts if they were to be raised by her parents. I am not surprized the kids loved their parents also. Kids don't know bad from good. They don't know what evil deeds are. I'm glad they were 'saved' and brought to their loving family. I also wondered why did the Grandparents were acting that way after he saved their kids, but I understood this story is told from Mr Spring's point of view and he is dealing with some inner demons about his past of providing meth and other drugs to people in the USA. He probably feels guilty about creating broken families as the Correli's and it is something he explores within his soul in his great story. I'm glad to hear this additional information from Families and friends that expose their own POV on the story, and most important I am thrilled to know the kids will grow in a better environment. This goes to show that every story has many sides, and the world is not black or white. All that is left is to look inside and do good to others.
