The stabbing of an elderly Leesburg couple Saturday (April 4, 2009) night at a Target store was the second knife attack at the store in a month. According to an arrest affidavit, a 33-year-old man had a knife placed to his throat in front of his wife and two children on March 13 inside the same U.S. Highway 441 Target store in Mount Dora. That victim, Laurent Body, was able to grab the knife's blade and push it away from his throat, while asking the suspect if he was going to kill him in front of his children. The couple called the manager and 911, and police arrested the suspect in the parking lot shortly afterward. "I was able to just talk my way out of it," Body told the Daily Commercial. "I wasn't going to play the victim." James Edward Ray, 26, of Mount Dora, was charged with aggravated assault and possession of hydrocodone in the March 13 incident, and was jailed on $10,000 bail. Mount Dora police Lt. Robert Bell said the two attacks were unrelated. However, like the Saturday attack at the store that left an elderly couple with multiple stab wounds, police said it was unclear why Ray attacked Body. According to an arrest affidavit, Ray had walked up to Body and asked if he played Xbox360, but the victim walked away. About two minutes later, Ray allegedly jumped out from the aisle behind the victim and placed a knife to his throat as his wife and his children -- then age 3 and 6 -- watched. "It just seems he was on drugs," said Body. "He was sweating profusely." Lt. Bell said on Tuesday said they are still trying to determine why Philip Heintzen, 80, and his wife, Sandra, 70, were attacked Saturday and are currently studying surveillance video for more answers. Police said around 7 p.m. Saturday, Jonathan Levy, 24, approached the couple as they were leaving the store and with knives in both hands, allegedly stabbed them multiple times in the torso and back. Mrs. Heintzen apparently had tried to scare the suspect away with her cane from attacking her husband, when he turned the knife on her, police said. Levy took nothing from the couple after he stabbed them, police said. He was captured soon afterward and booked into the Lake County jail and charged on two counts of attempted first-degree murder. His bond was set at $250,000. The Heintzens were taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, police said. Mount Dora police spokesperson Robin Mayfield said Mrs. Heintzen was in serious but stable condition. Mr. Heintzen underwent extensive surgery for his injuries and was in intensive care Tuesday. "He's not out of the woods yet, but we're optimistic," said Mayfield. Body said he hopes to visit the couple soon. "Their story has touched me," Body said. "I know I was very luck." Subsequent to this story Mr Heintzen die of his injuries.
My good friend actually works at that Target and was there when the in store incident occurred. From how she described it the man was hallucinating. He was saying very off the wall things. The two incidents really had nothing to do with each other. I would have to assume the other guy was either on drugs or crazy as well. Very sad story that kept me away from going to Target or Walmart at night for months. I still will not go without someone with me at night. It is sad that our sweet little town has to be consumed with these stupid drug abusing idiots.

Wow - is it finally coming to light that MDPD can no longer protect their "quaint" little city? Stabbings at Target and escapees from NDA - what's next? Oh yeah, they shoot people in the back over there too, don't they

I don't shop at Walmart or Target because I don't have to and I choose not to. It's worth it to pay for memberships to stores who don't cater to the dregs of humanity.

When I have run in there in the past to grab something to drink or a card or something, I hated the Target store.

Target used to be preferable to Walmart.

I won't buy clothes from either store. The lowest store I would go to is Kohl's and they carry Levi, Lee, and at least some name brands.

I also won't go in stores that have nasty bathrooms like Ross. Had to take somewhere once. Yuck.

Am I stuck up?
