Posts # 21 & 22 are illegal but shutting your water off because the city cant get in your home is illegal to if your bill is payed up to date.

What gives the council the authority to pass a law that lets the city come into our homes and replace all the meters?

The city has the right to inspect and change when it deems needed any device that they own. Your bill is paid to date makes no difference. The device is owned by the city and it has charge of it. The city can serve you with papers to get access and the sheriff (not local police) can go with them to make sure it is a peaceable experiance. If not go to jail and they will still change our meter. What the city is trying to impress on the people is to do it without haveing to go to court. If enough people have to go to court the water bill will include a fee to have all the legal fees covered.

Can't disagree with what you said. However you left out the part about how getting into your home to change the meter gives the city an opportunity to see what improvements you've made that they don't know about. Like a finished basement. That can raise your assessment which results in higher property taxes. So it's a win/win for the city.

So if I make my basement and rest of the inside look like a complete shlthole, can I get lower property taxes after the city has been in my home?

Sorry no. SCS will just figure you've updated the place using a De-toilet theme.

Well, we received a letter from SCS today stating that since there had been multiple attempts to contact us to replace our meter, they will now place a penalty fee added to our next water bill. And it will remain on future bills until an appointment is made. They never actually wrote how much the fee will be though (stupid). So now I have to call and find out, and then contemplate if I should just deal with this "fee" every month instead of having the meter installed. I have a feeling the fee will just be cheaper

I actually did make an appointment, which was due for this last Thursday, but I cancelled it a few days before. THEY NEVER WARNED OF A FEE IF NO APPOINTMENT WAS MADE. So how does saying "To avoid water shut-off, please make an appointment" equate to a penalty fee?

EVERY PERSON I have spoken to who has gotten these meters says their bill is around the $400 mark. And that's with 2-3 people living in the house taking showers, etc.

What are our kids going to do this summer? I know people with these meters won't be running the sprinkler, and those with pools won't be able to fill them. Thanks a bunch SCS! You suck!

Any word on that lawsuit?

We are looking for people in SCS to act together and get a class-action lawsuit together against the city of SCS regarding the Water Meters and the charges they are implying to residents this is not fair and absurd. Its time to act, I will be posting again with a number to contact and a meeting place. The sooner the better because SCS don't do very well in court decisions, maybe we can save the residents money...
I'm in for sure!

I am in for sure. Do NOT want new meters that are NOT accurate. I've heard stories of other cities water bills quadrupling, what they were paying every 3 months is now less than what they pay per month! I agree with giving the money to the fire department.

woah, that fee was $800. So I made an appointment for the end of April that I may have to cancel later down the road. But for now, the fee is gone.

Contact one of the major television stations help lines like Ruth to the Rescue. Wasn't a resident up at the podium recently stating that the city personnel were walking down I believe Rosedale putting door tags on that they were their to change the meter and the resident wasn't home WITHOUT EVEN RINGING THE BELL or knocking on the door. This same resident rec'd after that a threatening letter or door tag. Bunch of crap. Let everyone know how it is to live in Saint Clair Shores! No one is ever held accountable in this city!

My brother-in-law made an appointment to get his new water meter and the guy who installed it was a nice guy. But the new meter that he installed started to leak. So then they had to put on another new meter. It just makes me wonder what kind of quality they are using. He did get the puck outside he didn't want the wireless transmitter. Can't wait to move.

Did anyone see this opt-out program document?

http://www.stclairshores.net/DocumentCenter/V...

There is a clause that says:

"If the owner elects to opt out of the wireless fixed network system MTU installation, it is only to not have the MTU installed in the home. The Owner
must still allow the City Water Department employee
access to replace the water meter prior to the opt-out program beginning.

a.
The meter replacement shall include a new water meter, water usage register, and data collection endpoint on the outside of the home."

So, a new meter will be replaced, but minus the digital transmitter.$10 per quarter. SCS reserves right to change surcharge.

Anyone choosing this?

Good for Mr. Cook (I believe) who was on yesterdays council meeting regarding how he was treated by DPW dept employees. Mr. Babcock is looking more like a bully than anything else. Why doesn't SCS just contract out the DPW since we seem to have so many many problems with this department and they seem to be able to do anything they want and never are held accountable for anything!

I just got my meter replaced Monday, Sept.22, 2013. The tech. told me I was off by 200 units, so I figured at $3.42 per unit I would owe approx.$600.00. Today I got my new bill for $1425.00. This is absurd, how do I know this is accurate? I have lived here in SCS for 10 yrs. I just recently got laid of and the bill is due Oct.10. How do they expect someone to pay this that fast and what is the proof that I consumed that much water if the same meter was on the house from the previous owner. I will definitely be inquiring about this absurd bill and am interested in any lawsuit that may occur.
