im glad to see the last 9 residents are fighting to stay.they shouldn't be forced out of were they live and the government should stop trying to cover it up and take this town off the map it's ridiculous.

We stop there every year when we go to Knoebels. Some of my pics are on Offroaders.com . I feel for those residents and surely hope they win the fight to stay. As the mayor said in one interview, "there are some nice lots here people could build a home on." I agree! Let them stay and give them their zip code BACK!

My heart goes out to all current & prior Residents of Centralia.I was 15 Years old in 1962 & still Remember when my Father drove on Route 61(it used to be Route 122)from Ashland to Mount Carmel when we had & still do have relatives in Mount Carmel.I saw the smoke rising from the ground. The Church on top of the Mountain was the landmark i Remember, best.

Having visited Centralia myself recently, I agree 100% that the mine fire is a ruse to destroy the town and take over the rights to the valuable coal beneath it. If it were really as dangerous as the government claims, something would have happened already to the residents and/or visitors to the town. If it were so dangerous, why let people drive through the town? I'd personally consider obtaining property in the borough to help its fight to stay on the map.

The only way to not blow tax dollars putting out the fire is to let a coal company make a profit digging around the fire and isolating it. The last people there have severe executive functioning damage from the cumulative effects of carbon monoxide poisoning and anemia.

Stranger things have happened. In the 1920s during President Warren Harding's administration a crooked government official "leased" government oil to private industry and pocketed a very substantial kick-back. The official, Albert Fall, slipped this one right past the president; personal greed and misdeeds at the highest level of government.
