I was recently discussing the old, abandoned insane asylum up by Roney's Point.
There are two buildings up there that are abandoned. One looks like a school, the other is rumored to be an old asylum.
Does anybody know which is which, and where I could find any information about the buildings? I am very curious of the history....

Yes I live very close by there and there is a old insane asylum up on Roneys Point rd. on county farm rd. It was first used by one of the local breweries. then sold to the county and used as a TB hospital. after that until the fire around 1976 it was used as a state insane asylum. here are some pictures http://www.ohiotrespassers.com/hospital.html

and here is the web site of a movie coming out his year featuring the asylum
http://roneyspointmovie.com/

Just as a precaution there is a county sheriff that lives near by on the dead end road you have to pass his house to get to the asylum. and it is state property.

There's been rumors that after people died at this hospital/asylum they were buried behind the building and after the flood a few years back the bodies were washed up Is this true?

I grew up in the Wheeling area and went to that place when I was a teenager (1983-84ish). It was a pretty evil lookin' place. Gave me the willies.

I was lookin' on Google Earth for it. Anyone know the exact location?

the only little bit of information you can really find is located at the Ohio County Public Library and there really isn't too much about the place itself. You will learn mostly of the history before it even became and TB center when a German man that owned many businesses in the valley bought the old farm land and origionally built the structure as a dream retirement home for he and his wife. The structure was only in use as an insaine asylum for a very short time before burning down. if you hapen to find out more please repost.

My sister, brother and his wife worked at that place. It was a TB hospital at one time, they wanted it in that area because of it being on a high hill and better air quality. This was back in the early sixties. That's where my brother met his future wife. When I was a little girl, I remembered my sister stayed there during the week and came home on weekends. My brother, called it the poor farm.

2 years ago it was is guarded. By one man at the very front gate. He was dressed in black and what appeard to be armor. he has a 12 gauge shotgun and sits on a truck. The other guards are scatterd throughout the woods. From what I hear its not smart to tresspass. My brother and his friends went there once in 2003 to make a movie for there jackass group "ELM GROVE PROJECT". Upon entering the gate a man in a flanal shirt and cataract in one eye holding a large wooden handled axe came up looked at them and yelled in an almost unbareable scream "Leave, or you will have regret making this trip" then he slowly walked back into the woods. Kid siitng next to my brother honestly passed out from being so scared. I hope that helps with your wonderings. But that was 2 years ago who knows what goes on now. I live 5 miles from the thing and only ever made one trip, and there was dude with a gun so i said fuck it.

I've been inside the building pictured on "Ohio Trespassers" several times. The last time I went I was caught by the sheriff that lives up there and he didn't joke around. He was VERY angry. Anyway, The building is very unsafe but very interesting to explore. One can see where the wooden floors in the building were before they were burned out because all there are are burned stubs of what used to be floor beams. The rest of the building is concrete. There is another building at the end of the drive and theres also remains of a silo, green house, and another large brick building across the road from the asylum. I am unsure of what the building is at the end of the road; I've never gone into it due to the fact that the sheriffs house is right beside it. It does look quite a bit newer though. I have heard that it is just another branch of the entire hospital complex. As for the guards and stuf i've never seen them. If you decide to go and check it out, be prepared to get reprimanded if you get caught. Good luck!!

There was a caretaker on the county farm for several years but he did pass away last year. You can obtain a permit to hunt there from the Ohio County City Building in downtown Wheeling. I believe that is the only legal way you can go up there. There is a state trooper, not a sheriff that lives on that property. To get to the cemetary stay on Roney's Point Run Road, do not go up County Farm Road. It is about 1/2 mile further up the road and on the right. There is even a sign there, however it is very overgrown and the only time I would even think about going in there would be the winter. I live close by and the place is full of coyotes. It is called the poor farm because during the war and depression people worked there through some government funded program. I am very interested on further history of the place if anyone has it.

Ok, look..I used to live right next door to everything that you are refering to. The "guard" used to be an old sheriff that lived there. He was the caretaker for the land. He just threatened to shoot people to keep problems out of there. People live up there and don't appreciate the snooping around. The other people "hidden in the woods" was one person...ME who just liked to scare people and shoot paintballs at them for laughs. The "insane asylum" was a building they kept people with TB in. That's the long building at the top. The building the state trooper lives in used to be the nurse's station, and the other building was pretty much more or less a library. Nothing special. The woman that used to live where the state trooper lives used the long building at the top for storage. All that's in there are tires and junk. The buildings are falling down and infested with asbestos. Pretty dangerous stuff. They however are NOT haunted, and there's really nothing up there. I lived there for over 8 years. I should know. So really, find some better stories. I bet the most you'll dig up is about a guy who murdered some kid for dating his daughter and left him there. That's is. Oh, and check out the little brick building on the hill towards the state trooper's house...I dare you. It's a well. I should know, I almost fell in it. I've explored everything there. Really it's nothing special!

My grandmother at one time during the sixties admitted herself to the Roney's Point facility due to alcoholism. She stayed in the former TB Unit and had to take her meals in the common cafeteria at the larger now burned down building. A few years back, 1998 or so my friends and my self were caught trespassing and after speaking with the woman that lived in a house up the road, she informed us that if we should ever want to look around (we were shooting pictures for my friens photography class) just to inform her and also stay out of the buildings. Upon our inquiry she said that there was not an asylum for the insane. When i had told this to my grandmother she said something "like hell there was'nt crazy people there" sorry it's a quote. She continued with telling me of her experiences of having to go to the big building for meals and having to guard her plate from the people that stayed in the big building because they would just come up and take things from your plate. This is my grandmother's first hand experience and she is not one to exaggerate, really, she's a very understated type of person. I have heard many things less substantial, like that the trees growing in rows are actually grave markers for the people that died in the fire. Also, many years back some friends of mine were trying to leave there quickly one night after getting the creeps. They felt a presence following them, but they could'nt leave quickly due to the many rabbits that kept jumping into the road. they thought that was creepy.
Another time four friends and myself were galavanting around in Ol' Roney's Point and upon our attempt at leaving we quickly poured into the car as we heard another car approaching. We scuffeled into the car just in time for the car to drive up next to ours and bang on our window with something presumably metal. Yes most likely metal our ears rang for quite a bit of time.
That pretty much sums up my Roney's experience,it is what it is, my mother tells me that in her day it was a partying\make out spot. I dunno, I stay away these days. Trespassing loses it's glitter to some of us I suppose.

My family lived there in the 60's. There was the little building, where the well is. It is still there. Across from that the mansion. Then next came what we called the long barn, which is self explantory. Then a detention center for lost and wayward girls, next the nurses quarters, next the tb sanitarium, later was a insane assilum. I don't know how many families lived there as I was a very young girl at the time. My father worked a huge garden and he helped bury the dead in the pauper grave yard, which is located on the main road.

i use to play in both of those buildings when i was a child, for many years, my aunt lived behind the tb building at the top of the hill, the old crazy place we would call it, had cages in the basement and there was an underground tunnel that went under the road to another building that was torn down, also on the way up the road one will notice a turn around, that is where a young black man back in the 80's had his face and privates blown off, by a guy names bob mcconell. i still go up there becuse my aunt still lives there, and i go to those buildings whenever i want, lots of ghosts but they know me.
