MS Highway Patrol probes issue linking Bolivar County Sheriff

The Mississippi Highway Patrol is looking into a situation between one of its troopers and the Bolivar County Sheriff.

“Officials in Jackson and in Greenwood are aware of the situation,” said Mississippi Highway Patrol Sgt. Ben Williams.“They are looking into it.”

Sgt. Williams said several complaints have been filed against Patrolman Charles Lamb and though all have been proven to be unfounded, it has caused some contention with Sheriff Kelvin Williams.

An anonymous source said, conflict came to a head when Lamb made a DUI stop on a relative of the sheriff.

After which a memo, written by Sheriff Williams, said Lamb was not allowed to book any one else into the Bolivar County Regional Correctional Facility.

Sheriff Williams said the DUI didn’t have anything to do with the memo but that he has been told Lamb cursed at the young man and that he was tired of hearing about complaints from other people on Lamb’s behavior.

The memo has been sent out on Facebook and through e-mail.

The anonymous source said he had heard about the complaints from Sheriff Williams but that details on the complaints could not be given.“They were always vague.”

Late last week Lamb arrested a commercial truck driver, hauling liquid fertilizer, for being under the influence.

Lamb took the man to the correctional facility and then was told he was not allowed to leave him. According to the source, Lamb took the man to the Cleveland Police Department where he called a bondman and the man’s boss.

“We don’t know if the man was let back behind the wheel or not,” said the source, who added usually under these circumstances the detainee would be put into custody for a few hours to let the chemicals leave their body.

“I think the people of Bolivar County need to know what’s going on. Hopefully this will all work out,” said the anonymous source.
