Her family wrote:
He admitted to the police when they picked him up...end of story and no matter how why who what where or when, the moment he hit her and left her there like she was worth nothing, is the worst. She was beautiful and loving. Her only mistake was thinking she could love him better! True justice would be to give him to her daddy and walk away!
How do you know he admitted to the police? Link us to the article? Or did an investigator directly tell you? At the time of this post all I know is what I saw on WABG -- no charges have been filed and an investigation ongoing.
Like many other clevelanders, I'm just sick of all the gossip.

I agree with "her family" he left her for dead on a dark lonely highway. What did he expect would happen?? When you have an abuser you have to keep telling yourself the problem is their's not yours!! You can't help them...no matter what the case. I worked with this child's grandmother and aunt years ago and they are extraordinary people with extraordinary strength...I witnessed it first hand during the loss of another family member. I continue to pray for them and JUSTICE in this matter. At some point he will have to answer for his actions...easier here on earth rather than with his maker. May God bless her family!!!

T-r-u-e...Cleveland has local paper known as "The Bolivar Commercial". Today's article stated that per the MHP (in quotation marks) that he called 911 and admitted he ran her over and had "traveled a substantial distance" (i.e. left the scene). I'm with the family this is admission on his part. Regardless of whether his vehicle was the fatal blow or someone else's...he left her for dead in the road and she otherwise would not have been lying in the road to be hit by another vehicle. I realize that only 3 people know what happened..him, her and the good Lord, and unfortunately she is not here to tell her side...but the other witness ALWAYS has his eyes on you!!!

number one, ive known shelton for a really long time and he has always been a piece of garbage, number two, if you had a friend who called you getting beat everytime they get drunk you wouldnt want to lose her friendship by telling the whole world and making it even worse by getting the police involved when afterwards she's probably going to quit telling you everything however its still going to happen. when your in a domestic violence situation you are blinded by love. anything your loved one does in your eyes is excused by something you did or said. in the abusee's eyes it is always her fault. you just have to constantly be there for that friend and continue being there for them. shelby didnt deserve to be punished for making the simple mistake of thinking that she could change him if she stayed long enough. no matter what, if you werent out of your mind and hit a human being, if there was no guilt in your body, you would stop. think about it. most people would even stop after hitting a dog or deer. just think about that.

I am seeing all kinds of posts from shelbys friends that shelby would call them screaming for help, they saw bruises, knew of all these horrible instances of things he did to her. Did noone help her before he killed her? why would ANY of her friends allow her to go there alone to break up with him? I can honestly say if my best friend or a family member called me screaming and crying no matter the time of day/night I would be out the house and on my way to them. Becaue I have done it. Silence killed Shelby just as much as a truck. If you know someone is being abused, dont sit on your hands and keep your mouth shut! DO SOMETHING anything!
shelton and shelby had been at his mothers the night before. she did not go to his house to break up with him. they lived together. they got to arguing once they got home. shelton had his outburts unexpectedly without any sign in front of other people. she did not go to the house with him to break up with him. obviously they began fighting at home and she made the choice to leave and apparrantly he did something to prevent her from taking her car because she tried to walk and he must have also taken her phone because she didnt call for help.

So far all any of you are doing is thinking of what might have happened. A person can say "I'm going to kill you" when angry and never have any intentions of doing so. The ONLY news coverage, real news, says that the boyfriend is in protective custody...not even as a suspect. It says she was WALKING DOWN A HIGHWAY...anyone could have hit her. The article said it was too soon to tell if it is murder or an accident. Sure she broke up with an illegedly abusive boyfriend before hand. When I search her name there are no police records of Domestic Violence and if he was so abusive why would she have went by herself, walking in the middle of nowhere down a highway to break up with him, knowing she would have to walk back or could be beaten without people to support her? The only way that this is conceivable is if she was not scared that he would hurt her, which does not point to an abusive relationship. All that people (frieds, family, other loved ones) are doing right now are speculating because there is no evidence reported for now. Don't judge a man before all evidence is in because it could have been anyone driving down the highway that hit her and kept going. IF IT WAS her boyfriend he deserves to rot in hell, that is cruel...but if not then you are all just making a sad situation worse. If it was you, you wouldn't want to be judged before any real info was available. All I have read on the Tanya Carter page was allegations without proof or substance behind them. She claims that they fought, she broke up and walked away and that he was abusive but where does it say that he was seen hitting her, his tire tracks were found, or any other PROOF? It doesn't because it is all emotional allegations for now. Let law enforcement do their jobs and when the investigation is closed then we will know the "facts" because there will be proof. The other people saying that we will never know the truth are right. Unless a video tape of the break-up and accident are available we will never know. Even a witness can't be seen as knowing the truth because it is jaded by their perception of the event. I will go with beyond a reasonable doubt AFTER the police finish and the evidence has been presented in a court of law.
its not about fault, SHELBY DID NOTHING WRONG BUT LOVE, and it killed her. She was a KID, probably confused, thinking she loved this douche bag. Its wrong, regardless....the guy deserves the maximum sentence. Plus 1,000 years to burn in hell. If you can find it in your heart to defend a KILLER, you didnt know or care about SHELBY

i think that person is trying to imply that people are using reactionary emotions rather than realizing the way of the justice process and what's involved. they aren't defending anyone.

everything will work out. just keep praying. the MBI cannot press charges until their investigation is complete. we also have to wait on toxicology and other reports. and remember, unfortunately this is not the only case going on in mississippi. we only have one crime lab in our area. let the investigators do their job. no one wants a botched investigation, do we?!?

I HAVE SEEN SITUATIONS LIKE THIS BEFORE WHITH MY EXPERIANCE WORKING WITH EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAMS AND THE PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING IF YOU WILL IT IS OBVIOUS THAT ONE SHELTON FULGUM RAN OVER MISS HARMON THEN LEFT THE SCENE ONLY LATER TO RETURN TO HIS RESIDENCE WHICH FROM WHAT I HEAR IS CLOSE TO THE SCENE AND HE ALLEGEDLY SAT ON THE TAILGATE AND WATCHED MULTIPLE VEHICLES RUN OVER MISS HARMON BEFORE HE HIMSELF CALLED 911 TO TRY TO MAKE HIMSELF LOOK INNOCENT IN REALITY ALL HE DID WAS MAKE HIMSELF LOOK MORE SUSPECIOUS HE THINKS THAT HE HAS FOOLED PEPOLE BUT HE FAILS TO REALIZE THAT PEPOLE ARE NOT IGNORANT AND WILL FIGURE OUT WHAT HAPPENED AND I AM GUESSING MORE THAN JUST FULGUM KNOWS THE TRUTH THERE IS SOMEONE HE CONFIDES IN AND I STRONGLY ADVISE THAT ANYONE WITH INFORMATION COMES FOWARD THIS COULD HAVE BEEN SOMEONE IN THIER FAMILY. THE FAMILY OF MISS HARMON LOVED THEIR DAUHTER AND THEY DESERVE CLOSURE AND SHELBY DESERVES JUSTICE.

I don't know this family or anyone involved but I am angry. How could someone do this to anyone? No one deserves to die like that, I don't care who they are.

This young girl's life is over and her parents have to bury their child knowing what happened during her final moments on this earth. It is sickening and sad.

No words can comfort during a time like this but if anyone from Shelby's family is reading this, you are not alone, we all grieve for your child and your loss.

The shame of abuse and the silence of her friends and family did not help. They lost their loved one anyway, to murder because they didnt want to bring into the light what was happening. How was anyone ther for her while she was being abused? it was allowed to continue. Anyone who knew and did nothing should bear some of the guilt. That is the problem with this world. All ofyou are quick to jump on the bandwagon and scream justice for shelby, but where was her justice while she was alive. why were there no justice for shelby, and help shelby fundraisers going on while she was alive to get her out of the grips of her abuser. All of their dirty laundry is out in the open now, the only difference is she is no longer with us. I would risk my friend being mad at me rather standing by and looking at them bruised and battered and listen to them scream for help over the phone. STOP THE SILENCE. Silence is the killer.
