So it is technically possible for something to happen in this town that doesn't involve a shooting, stabbing, and a flight on a helicopter to an out-of-town trauma center?

So to clarify, did they take just the pup or both the mother and the pup? Sounds like they took the pup away from its mother... I wonder why pups are being born in unusual places this year.

I saw a very young pup a couple weeks ago in Seacliff. It's mother wasn't there and it was tiny, a newborn. I keep The Marine Mammal Center's phone number in my contacts in case I run across an animal in distress on the beach, you'd surprised how often that happens. I hope we don't have a summer like last year with all the undernurished pups on the beach.

if the main beach becomes another rookery all the local business will be whining endlessly. and that's why they took the baby away. can't let them spread south on to main beach that would be bad for business!

Actually, The colonies of breeding seal lions, and even more so the colonies of Elephant seals, having been spreading south for a couple of decades. And unlike the Elephant seals, who fast for the duration of the whelping/nursing season, Sea lion moms go out and feed, then come back to the pup. I think they needed to get that expensive beach real-estate cleared for the crowds they hope to see at the boardwalk this weekend.
