Reduced budgets force Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute ...

Hoping to ride out stormy economic seas, Northern California's leading ocean science center has decided to cut costs by reducing the time its research ships spend on the ocean by nearly one-third. Since April 1, managers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute have taken the Point Lobos, their 110-foot research ship, largely out of ... Full Story

It was just two weeks ago the Senile reported the Aquarium had installed Man Made Global Warming information kiosks at their exhibit facility! Hum, maybe they could make a whole lot more money investing in carbon trading credit corporations al la Al Gore what with the upcomming Cap and Tax fiasco and current California version contained within AB 32 provisions and mandated tax increases! Big money to be made by all of the followers Man Made Global Warming Hoaxers and the Aquarium shouldn't be left out in the rain!
Thanks

As a teacher, I thank the MBA for its continued commitment to students and their teachers/chaperones by providing free admission, as well as adult-led educational programs prior to viewing the aquarium's exhibits.

Kudos MBA!

If I catch a fish to eat or to sell for food they call it raping the ocean. Shame on all you fishermen!......

If they "MBA" catch the same fish, stick it in a tank, and charge people to look at it, they call it "researching".
W-T-H?

Remember that one has to fish for fish to feed the fish that ones so called "researching". It never ends.

The attitude is, its NOT ok to fish to feed people or for a living. Do to intense overfishing causing climate change, and were all going to die, type of stuff!
But, it IS ok to fish for feed and replacments specimens
for so called "research"?
and from all over the world too, no less?

Hmmmm,
Something fishy about the politically correctness
of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute.
If it were up to me Id keep the Point Lobos in action but trashcan and liberate the "FISH ZOO"!

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is really a beautiful place
for kids and people to see live fish and stuff.
But its far from what I would call "GREEN" or
"Environmentaly friendly".
There poop stinks too....

Google made 2.5 billion in profit on 7 billion in income over the last three months. Maybe the MBA just needs a younger "Sugar Daddy".

Maybe if they stuck to research and education, they'd be getting donations from TEA-BAGGERS. Donations down? That's because you decided to do some ADVOCACY. Daddy's and Grand-Daddy's fortune won't last forever. You need TEA-BAGGERS, who have the cash to support RESEARCH and EDUCATION. Have fun with your advocacy l'ill Miss Packard!

Eric Schmidt just might 'rent' the Pt. Lobos and crew.

Is that a joke? Tea Baggers don't believe in anything but their own selfishness. The most prominent aspect of the so-called movement is social Darwinism. You should do some research on Lucille Packard before you start mouthing off and trying to disparage her name. You should also research how this type of nonprofit foundation is organized, who makes decisions, and how those decisions are derived.

And: Since when do "TEA-BAGGERS" support research and education? They don't appear to support anything that may imply the "socialist" prospect of using public money and private donors to support something that may not turn a profit.

The aquarium and MBARI are associated, but they are two different institutions in two different places with two different purposes. MBARI is in Moss Landing. Funding sources are in no way identical. MBARI, as far as I know, just does research, and that research is top-level.

BTW, if researchers somewhere find that the ocean is warmer, that's not advocacy, that's saying "the ocean is warmer". If you have evidence to the contrary, you are free to present it, explain why some southern species are moving north, etc.

Monterey used to have a sports team call the Barracudas, because it used to be warm enough for them to live there. The sardine fishery sprang up during a period of cold water, and then it disappeared when the water warmed. It has since cooled. Humboldt squid were documented here in the 1790s, then called "Red Devil Fish." And I learned of their new "advocacy" stance in the magazine and "personal" letter they send to large donors. It seems that I might actually be the one who what she's talking about.

Perhaps. In any case, presenting facts is a lot more effective in making that case (not to mention more interesting) than just asserting stuff. Thanks.

True, but not as much fun. It's not like I care if you're persuaded. I'm just getting fodder for my next book: http://www.27bslash6.com/

True. You should find a hobby to discuss. Or some friend with common interests. Fewer trolls. But hey, I'm heading back to Hawaii, so I'll probably just move back the the Hawaii Tribune-Herald anyway.

"Discussion"--that's funny. Buy my book!

I believe you have been misled. The "Tea Party" refers to the revolt against excessive taxation, same as what's coming down the pike now. Why do you feel that other people are selfish for not wanting to give YOU their money? "Social Darwinism"? It's cute how SOME people keep "changing" the language, terms, and their meaning. For those of us who were educated prior to our countries schools turning into a third world toilet, "he" is referring to the "Process of Natural Selection". The remainder of your rant is rather telling of you socio-economic class, as you're a one-trick pony obsessively focused on what productive members of society have gained for themselves through hard work, as you sit in your tax-payer funded apartment in your Che Guevarra (sp?) shirt and b.i.t.c.h. about how terrible they are for having nicer things than you do (as you fondle your cheap, 14k gold-plated chains hanging around your neck).
