Actually, it's really not funny, Jason. Having been a long time resident of Gueydan I have witnessed over the years, many horrendous accidents some of which involved unnecessary deaths.
Gueydan is made up of two very distinct groups; the older people, 50 and up and the younger people 30 and less. Hardly with exception the hardest hit age are those less tha 25 years old and invariably their deaths or injuries attributed to auto accidents are linked directly to the willfull use of either alcohol or drugs or both. There seems to be no end in sight for this behavior and that is unfortunate. As a result highway injuries, death and crippling will continue until there is a realization that driving and drinking or driving under the influence of anything may and does lead to "accidents" which are totally avoidable.
It has been the habit of this small rural community to grant excessive freedom to its young. That freedom is typically granted without supervision of any type. Then when "something" does happen, rather than placing the blame where it belongs, on the parents and the users, the incident is hushed up, the perpetrator is cacooned away and protected from the police and inaccurate or falce facts are provided.
Understanding that parents do not like to see their children go to jail, it is more important to see those same at-risk individuals be held accountable for their conduct.
Why not DWI/DUI check points in Gueydan on New Years or even on a random basis? For the most part, "traffic stops" for DWI and/or DUI are illegal. However; "traffic stops" to ensure lawful compliance with driving regulations and general safety are not illegal. Safty stops are effective but as you know this community does not want that and the government can not tolerate the indignant tax payers.
Why not? Why not indeed?

Daily Horoscope for December 5

Libra

Your social life has a lot to offer under the Leo Moon and it would be a shame to spend too much time on your own. Venus, your life-ruler, in the sign of the Archer, is outgoing and jovial, but you're keen to make a serious effort with people you aren't normally all that keen on. Take them in your stride, and look on the bright side. There's always something to like about anyone!
