Unionized government employees should be illegal. The reason is obvious: Unlike in the private sector where there's balance between the interests of the company and the unions, the state is conflicted in representing the people and negotiating with unions. That's because the unions are BIG political players, with contributions and clout, and thus they have more pull with the people they're negotiating with than the taxpayers that foot the bill. Unions in the private sector have an interest in not driving their host out of business (not that that stopped the UAW from bankrupting the automakers); unions in the public sector figure their employer can't disappear. This is part of government dysfunction, and another big factor in why government represents the special interests and not the people.
