Teen injured in beating is in stable condition
BY MELANIE LALLIER, Tribune Staff Writer
A Jefferson City boy, Chase Dacus, who was brutally beaten at College Square Mall Saturday night, is in stable condition at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
"Hes making progress everyday," said Chases mother, Melissa Dacus.
The 15-year-old had reportedly been to the movies with four friends Saturday night. According to his stepfather, Chris Wilson, the boys mother walked the kids into the theater and left the mall around 8 p.m.
"That was the first time Chase had ever been dropped off there by himself," Wilson said.
When she returned a short time later to pick them up, she pulled up behind an ambulance. Dacus was already unconscious.
The teen had allegedly been attacked by a 16-year-old boy. Police reports indicate the juvenile attacker punched Dacus in the face, and then left the scene only to return a short time later. He has been charged with aggravated assault.
At some point, someone poured a flavored sports drink on Dacus, possibly in an attempt to wake him up.
Dacus was taken to UT Medical Center where he remained unconscious and on a ventilator for several days. He began waking up Wednesday.
As his stepfather related the boys injuries, the severity of the attack became clearer.
Dacus has what is most commonly known as Shaken Baby Syndrome. He has two hemorrhages on his brain, one in the front and one on the back. He lost two teeth, one of which came through his face, causing the need of 8 to 10 stitches.
According to his family it could be as many as 18 months before the extent of the damage to his brain is known.
"He doesnt know his whole name or birthday or stuff like that," his mother said.
A trust fund has been set up at SunTrust Bank under the name Tristen Chase Dacus. Anyone wishing to donate toward Chases extensive medical bills can visit SunTrust to do so.
