I think the CT is a good paper for our community. They make some mistakes here and there but overall I think they are a very good paper. I don't think they pay reporters great but I think they have some good solid backbone for the paper with substance with people like stan johnson and carla cody. stan may be washed up but I think he has helped make the paper what it is today. Bob Moore seems somewhat on the crazy side but he does get the news out and i'd challenge someone to do a better job than him. the others seem to come and go and there is always room for improvement and i don't agree with everything they do but i have gotten the paper delivered at my house for over 30 years and i think it is better today than it has ever been and i read it and feel better for it

I can only speak for the online version, which is actually a watered down version of the print (If you can fathom that).

It works when you live away from the area and want to get an idea of what's going on.

I'm not used to a newspaper that takes less than 5 minutes to read.

car wreck on main street five dead. fire on second north street, house saved. whats going on in Morristown. This aint the paper for you. Oh if I lived in Newport or out of Hamblen county it would be ok. One gets more news from the Knoxville, Greeneville, or Grainger County papers.
Speaking of a local paper, it should be MORE local. But, it is better than nothing but near nothing. Like Foodie says "5 minutes" I can spend five minutes here on the forums and get more information about Morristown and Hamblen county.
Money well spent, here that is.

Waste your 5 mins. It's not worth it.

You can find more information and faster on the internet, than you can in that 5 minute or less paper.

I feel bad I left out the Standard Banner, Jefferson county newspaper. It is better than the CT. Oh yes, I read more than this stuff on topix.

Seems to me the reporting is influenced by local politics as well.

I have never been a fan of the Tribune, I get most of my local news from the internet.

Have you ever noticed how fast their reporters come and go? I don't think they hire qualified people to start with.I read it because my work gets it. I wuldn't pay for it otherwise. I skim the headlines, checkout the cute Cody girl's column, those are usually good; read the crimebeat, the obits, and the sports, which have some strange stories. Other than that, I don't give it much attention. In a nutshell, they need some decent writers for their beats.

It's only been in the last few years that I've realized what a mouthpiece the CT is for the powers that be. They have a tendency to only print one side of an issue, and you can bet it's the side that the publisher chooses. And while that's their right as owner of the paper, it sure would be nice to have a balanced account of what goes on, open critique of issues around the area, and something more than the promotion of one group's agenda. But that's just my 2 cents.

well, i hear you brother but dude, that is the way it is with all papers. You don't think the big time papers print what the publisher wants? There is NO SUCH THING as a balanced newspaper. Might as well stop dreaming about such a thing. The CT does as good as anybody. They at least have different opinions in the writers. The big guy is a business guru. Stan is a cry baby. The fat dude is a liberal. Carla is a toss up between an softie and a hard ass depending on her mood of the day and the reporters are all clueless. Thats about as balanced as you are going to get from any paper.

I would imagine that the CT is a stepping stone in a Jounalist's career. I am not aware of many journalist college students who aspire to write for a small town rag. I would also imagine that the reverse is true... someone near the end of their career writing for a major publication may want nothing more than to retire to a less hectic pace.

It's a small town paper that gets the majority of it's news via the wire service. Most of it's revenue is generated by local ads and coupon inserts. Nice little social calendar telling who did what and with whom. If an advertiser doesn't like something, they woun't run it. Thats one reason Higher Grounds got slammed so badly in the paper. Not enough ad revenue, I suppose.

I have read the CT for about a year now ever since i moved to Morristown. I think they advertise by writing stories and they focus on the people whot hinik they are the main characters in morristown. You don't hear much about the little guy even in this little town because it is mostly the big fish in this little pond that the paper wants to make happy. there are some exceptions though. I don't think their editorial page reflects their big busines minds. I like reading Carla Cody, too and sometimes Stan

why are we still on this dead issue? Everyone knows the CT has their head up their ass. Why bother trying to get them to print decent news stories? The sports section is full of literal shit.(someone there must get a kick out of sneaking in the word) and the news department doesn't know the difference between ficiton and non fiction. let's move on to a more interesting topic and not give the time of day

A few of the people at the Republican Tribune have "talent" but some have nothing to do with a newspaper.
The one's that could use their talent for their job at the Tribune...are not going to get paid for what they're worth.
Many faces have moved on to greener fields that have worked there in the past, and 4-5 have moved on in the past year.
The motorcycle riding "picture-taker" has worked there for 30 years....almost up to $10.00 per hour now.
BUT, there is some $15.00 per hour jobs there that I'd like to have myself. Only problem is- I can't really bend-over that far like some of them have to do.

And that five minutes is only if you are a slow reader. A slow reader might need two minutes to read the Monday paper. I really do not know why they print it. I have the Wednesday and Sunday paper delivered to my door so that I will have a paper guy to give a nice Christmas Bonus and some of Tina's oatmeal cookies to and I will say, she has made enough of those that I am surprised I do not look like an oatmeal cookie. I have a darn good young guy that gets out of bed early on Sunday morning and has my local paper in the box by 6:00 a.m. I like that. As I have grown older, checking the Obits and Crime Beat seem to have become more important to me. Sometimes I buy a paper at the BP #8 and I often scan both the Knoxville paper and C-T while I am delivering meds to someone at the Regency Retirement Village. I always like to get a few opinions from my 80 years old friend, George. His mind is sharp as a tack and he was once a proud owner of a coal mind in Kentucky. George is always good for an interesting story or two and I am all ears when he talks. The best thing I can say good about the C-T is the quality of their pictures and they are second to none in that department. All in all, I would give the paper a rating of a "C+" for small town newspapers but they are always printing where they won some State Awards for different things in Journalism. Maybe I should give them a higher rating, after all--what in the heck do I know about the Newspaper business? You tell me. No, don't tell me, I will tell you. I know absolutely nothing about the business. I would like to be a guest writer in the paper one day and the name of my article would be-"Morristown Topix Writers,#1."
