This was also something taught in the 80's... something about Puerto Rico..... while the US does own it. It is considered a "territory" not a state.... In other words they can come and go, like a state. But there government is their own.

I believe my teachers always said that that they were trying to make Puerto Rico a state so "maybe we will have 51"

I'm hoping your wife moved here from another nation and wasn't educated in our school system.

ROFLOL, it is amazing how those little "facts" are so trouble some, in certain areas. As someone stated earlier, "facts are facts' doesn't matter where they came from, the truth doesn't have two sides!

Does the state of confusion count? Hopefully disrepair is just a territory.

Fifth-grade students in Hamblen County Schools are required to identify all fifty states and their capitals, as taught by their teachers.

I remember when my wife was in the 4th grade and they would teach her wrong stuff. Since I was in 6th grade, we knew there could only be 47 states, cause mississippi opted out. For a little while The state of Franklin made it 48 and that is when they made the contract to print all the flags.

The teachers may be right and it is all reaaly a big conspiricy from teh Washington polititions refusing to admit they bought to many flags with your tax money.(misspellings on purpose)

Trivia:
I just checked and there are 12 US Territories and outlying areas. I admit I was to lazy to read what the definition of an outlying area is; BUT before you look it up, how many can you name.

The Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, (that's really all I can remember) maybe the Cayman Islands.

Just looked it up,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._sta...

Knew about Guam, forgot about American Samoa, didn't know the Mariana Islands still belonged to U.S. I think at one point the Philippines had "commonwealth" status, is that the same as "territory"
