I'm going to be a senior at East. I'll let all the adults get their engines revved up and prejudge me based on that fact. Done? Awesome.
Personally, I don't really see the big deal. If I was told to walk, I'd walk. If I was told I had to ride a bus, I'd ride a bus. I haven't driven in my previous three years of school— I'm lucky enough to have a relative or friend drive me. As for the freshman (who shouldn't be driving, unless they failed a few years, in which case.. well, we still probably wouldn't want them driving), sophomores, and juniors, reward doesn't come without sacrifice.
They're building on to a school. Should they be instead putting more effort into making a new school? Most likely, but it's not my choice to make. The point is, whatever they're adding on will greatly help. The more space, the better. If your child has a job and needs to drive, send them on the bus, park the car, and make them realize that education is far superior to minimum-wage work. Most of the money they earn probably goes to the car anyway, and the rest probably goes to material objects. For the small portion of my friends and classmates who invest their earnings into a college fund, this will be a blow, but perhaps they could alter their hours so they could ride a bus back home, then get in their car and drive to work from there.
All in all, I think that there have been some very immature posts in this thread (from both minors and adults, sadly), and I think that those who resort to name calling and flaming to try to get a point across really should rethink their whole stance. It's really easy to be an asshole on the internet, sadly, so there's probably nothing that can be done. All I ask is that, whoever says today's youth are all fat, spoiled, and selfish: I pity you, so so much, because you've not been introduced to those young men and women who have talent, skill, and education, and the kindness enough to overlook adults like you who have nothing better to do than complain about today's youth.
Bad case of the, "You whippersnappers get off my lawn!" syndrome.

The only issue I see with this matter would be students with jobs being unable to get to work after school. I began working my first part-time job the summer before my junior year of high school (my parents required me to pay for my car insurance and all other personal expenses as soon as I turned sixteen, which doesn't seem to be too common anymore...), and I had to be at work at 3:30 on weekdays my junior and senior year. Both of my parents worked long hours and wouldn't have been able to leave work and pick me up from school and drive me to my job. My workplace also would have been too far away for me to safely walk there after school. The bus that I rode my freshman and sophomore year took an hour to arrive at my home on the east end of town (my house was the last stop on the route), therefore I wouldn't have been able to ride the bus home and then drive to work. I think that if students have a job, they should absolutely be able to drive to and from school. If not, then I see no reason why they can't ride the bus or have a parent should pick them up.

honestly....i have no job...my mother doesn't want me to work because she said she wants me to focus on my schooling....yes i BUY MY OWN gas and yes i PAY MY OWN insurance...and yes I BOUGHT MY OWN car. there is a reason i did all this...its called self fullfillment...my mother has always pushed me to strive for the best...but let me get to the point...i have told johnson I AM driving to school whether he likes it or not..the funny thing is...if my car gets towed...i get it back for free!.. but still we work hard for our parking spots..we work hard for our cars...(some)...the school board should have figured this shit out a long time before school let out....parents complain because they have to give their kid gas money or pay their sky high insurance...look at it this way...do YOU want to pay for gas and insurance AND all the EXTRA TAXES for more school buses...and the stuff you see on the news where HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS HARM THE YOUNGER STUDENTS?? trust me it happens in morristown...oh and dont forget the taxes are going to go up because they are adding on to East...so face it you have a bunch of stuff to pay for...gas(not only for your child but for yourslef), insurance(not only for your child but for yourself), sometimes car payments..extra buses, and raised taxes on well pretty much everything because the school board is stinjy with their money so they decide to take everyone elses....? think about it...whats the more expensive way? fist come first serve parking or seniors only?? consider it..do you have that kind of money...if so what tree you picking it off of?

99% of those 16-17 year old goobers cant drive worth a damn. The less of them on the roads in the moring while folks are trying to get to work the better.
I say make them ALL either ride th bus or walk. Hell, most of them boys and girls got a fat belly and fat puffy looking face anyways. I guess they want to drive so bad so they can stop and get three orders apiece of biscuits and gravy in the mornings.
Bottom line is they're KIDS and they need to shut up and do what they're told...when they're told.
considering your all about 'food' and how 'overweight' everyone is, im assuming your the one stopping every morning on your way to work for food, if you even work! you sound lazy! and dont tell me that all teenagers drive bad when just as many if not more adults are bad drivers!!!!!

All of Morristown are bad drivers. The reason for the driving problems is either that driver is doing it or thinking about doing it. "Let us get it on"

This whole situation would be prevented if they would have just built a new east high school then they could keep the school as is only making the minor repairs necessary and not have to remodel until the new school was built so if you are looking for somebody to blame i guess point the finger at the school board
Well the problem is if they built a new highschool it would be for both east and west, which no one really wants. the schoolboard had an open meeting with the public about the situation.

You have no idea what you are talking about! The addition and the other work being put into East is being paid mostly from government grants. Also, if you have NO job then how do you pay for your own gas, own insurance, and your own car? I think mommy may be sliding you cash under the table. Another thing, if you have no job then you pay no taxes. My advice is to keep quiet, because you have no friggin' clue!!!!!!!!!

He bought the parking pass, they told him it was first come first serve in the lower and back parking lots, if your man enough to smack me in the back of the head I would suggest a very good insurance policy with lifetime disability, CAPICHE?

This is crazy! I agree riding a bus to and from highschool is punishment. How many of you have rode a school bus?? The are hot, over crowded, and LOUD. There must be somewhere for these kids to park. What about kids who play sports, have jobs...I am sure many parents would love to take their children to school but may have jobs that don't prmit that.I hope something is done about this mess before my babies get to highschool.I was all about 1 new state of the art highschool for Hamblen Co.

Riding a school bus is punishment?? It saves parents money and also saves the environment. If riding the school bus is unsafe or a punishment, then does that mean the gov. should buy cars for all students who can't afford one? Or does it mean that all buses should be parked and students get their by foot and bicycle? Or does it simply mean that some parents have spoiled their children so much that they think it is 'below their stature' to ride the bus with the 'nobodies'?

I think they should number the spots, and the number on your parking permit should be the spot they get. I think that this would eliminate some of the choas of parking. I am also concerned that they will not be allowed to use the redlight to leave school. I believe that is a much safer way to exit.

I was a student at east high a few years ago. and i rode the bus to and from school my freshman year then i found ways to school by car pooling with friends. ad i chiped in for gas when i rode with friends. but since Mr Johnson has made the decision to have only senior drive to school makes since to me cause having all the sophmores and juniors drive makes getting out of school harder when people have to work. i worked my senior year as well but being able to get out was harder and i usually almost ended up in a reck everytime i tired to get out of the parking lot. due to the underclass showing off there cars. and not leaving and just hanging out in the parking lot. i think thats why Mr. Johnson has made the decison he has to keep people from hanging out in the parking lot and also make it easier for construction of the school.
