I have a child beginning Kindergarten this year and I would like to get him into Union Heights. We are out of zone so I'm wondering if anyone out there can give me honest opinions about the school and the quality of teachers and staff.

Thank you.

Two of my children went to UH for several years until this year because we moved. I have to say I truly miss that school and the staff. I have several family members whose children still attend that school and the majority of the families are very involved in the school activities. I have a fifth grader and a third grader and I have no complaints about the teachers or other staff. Mr. Carter became principal a few years back and the school has taken a whole new look and feel. I would highly recommend this school to anyone!

I pray your child does not need any type of special assistance to facilitate it's learning.

That is all I have to say! I pray your child is a "Cookie Cutter Kid"!

I would suggest visiting the school and talking to the principal. Also, there are brochures on each school that you can pick up at the school system's central office, and each school maintains a website. Topix is not an appropriate place to get information. It's only purpose is for gossip and slander.

Concerned Parent, I have no idea where "see" was coming from. I have multiple kids at Union Heights and I can tell you it is a wonderful place. They have a great principal, a wonderful faculty, and an awesome support staff. It kind of reminds you how school used to be in the good ol' days, but with all the modern technology. For instance, there are smart boards in each classroom - pretty awesome. The facilities have also gone through a major facelift in the past year. It's an impressive facility now. The PTO is also very active and this year they raised enough money to build a new playground which will be arriving very soon.

I could go on and on. There may be a better elementary school in Hamblen County, but I seriously doubt it. Trust me - you will not regret sending your child to UH. Go Tornadoes!

Best school in the county. Great teachers and facility. They have a very active group of parents as well. Mr. Carter is doing an excellant job. This is what a school should be. Go Tornados!

I am coming from the stance that that environment got that complete overhaul because I spoke out on March 13,2009 and no they were not prepared. I can indeed testify to that.

So can my children!

Yep that's why Mr.Carter wouldn't provide the PTO info for us when we asked ... He said that's a violation of "Hippa laws".

The special education included suggestion of a "Whisper room"!

Oh and before anyone stands up and says I am lying... I have that documented on their letterhead not mine!

I don't know about Union Heights School but I do know HIPAA law and it is a violation to give out any information about "special education" students. The federal and state governments take any violation of releasing any type of private and protected information very seriously. That is the reason the HIPAA law exists.

I asked for the name of the PARENT TEACHER ORGANIZATION and how to contact them so that our family could become involved parents in the educational process.

Hippa is for medical... the family privacy act protect the student and the school info. Two different laws!

See, clearly you have an ax to grind. I'm sorry you had a bad experience. But based on all the rest of the comments on here thus far, it seems pretty clear that UH parents and former parents are very pleased with the school.

And as for Smart Boards, go to the rest of the elementary schools and see how many of them have the boards in each classroom. Let us know what you find out.

And as for the reading program, the Accelerated Reader (AR) program is as strong as it's ever been. Scores keep getting higher and higher each year. This year's AR winner will probably have somewhere in the neighborhood of 300-400 points. I'd also challenge you to see if you can find that at any of the other elementary schools. Mrs. Creech is doing a fantastic job. More books are being added to the library with each passing day. I know - I was there when many books were added during the Book Fair. More books are also being added to the classrooms.

an ax to grind... hmmm no I am dead set on getting the truth out.

The improvements are not a fluke they are in place because of major issues that my son's dealt with while enrolled there from Jan 2009 to April 21, 2009. The problems we uncovered were great.

The books being added... I should hope so considering they had a budget of 500 a year to purchase new books. As for the AR program well versed in it. My son was teased by students there who said your making up words. He resorted to carrying a dictionary to prove that he wasn't. He became the top reader in that short period and the staff didn't acknowledge it at all.

The labeled him and ended up ASSAULTING him and yes I can prove it.

Oh as for that smart board... It is indeed old technology. The state of TN is # 46 and yes they are behind the curve! Ain't doubt about that.

If you can go to John hay, do! They are accelerated In every subject, for every grade. Check the scoring systems online. If I'm not mistaken alpha ranks 1, John hay 2, then Russelville3

No he is actually better than me. I am a parent who spoke out for all of you and your children. It is truly sad that I had to go to the degree I did to garner changes for the area.

I bet you a dollar they think twice before they do it again!

It is truly hilarious that you are the only one complaining and your child only attended for 3 months? Sounds like you and your wonderfully gifted child is the problem.
UH is a wonderful school. Move on, lady! It's been two years.

It is HIPAA Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Dont let the name confuse you and your childs special education records are protected. Does your child have ADD/ADHD? If so...you can always contact your local CHADDs office for help with the school system.
