Hank Smith is a great coach. I have played for him for 4 years and won the league every year. And that guy that helps him (he calls every body honey) is a super coach as well.

rec leauge grandma

Before you start telling a story make sure you get it right. The first baseman missed two games, not only one as you stated ( do you know why she missed)??. As far as playing the first place team and beating them, they lost the first game where the first baseman was out and won the second game when the head coachs daughter was out and when the whole team was there they got beat. The last time they played the pitcher was on vacation (get it right). As far as the two players playing in maryville your facts are all wrong again, one player was asked to play for them and then she got her friend on the team. the other players was not asked to play in maryville(too far to drive) i think that the allstar team that was picked is the best team players that they could have been picked. i feel for the two that didn't make it. Remember this is about the kids, not the parents.

phillip or hank or whoever can pretend all they want to - but they are interested in their kids making it, which is why they keep the teams. hank could have taken more but didnt. he may be a fine man off the field or even on the field but he should have taken the maxium if it is really about the kids. did he think no one else deserved to go? well, some of the fat kids he took didn't deserve it anymore than other kids on the team. and phillip is just a daddy-want-a-be who doesn't seem to know what he is doing either. some of the kids picked are rude, disrespectful and annoying.

I know for a fact the things said about Hank are true. I have a son who played on his rec leauge team a few years ago. He was one of Hanks picks, nor were we friends. My son sat on the bench during the games. At practices Hank or Roy Martin did not work with him to improve his game. They did nothing that a true coach who has a love for the children should have done. My son and two others were treated as if they did not exist. In an enviorment as this no child will ever improve. I also am in contact with children who are in Hanks circle, and play for the Canes, There was no open try outs for the travel team. Hank contacted the parents of the kids he wanted either on the phone or recruited them at the rec leauge games. Only a select few were asked. The kids that I know who play both travel and rec leauge baseball think they are better than the rec leauge players, look down on the rec leauge teams, and on many occasions they have made fun of the rec leauge players. To me this is not fair. The kids who play travel ball also miss weekend practices for rec leauge teams, and this is not fair to the kids who show up at every practice only to be over looked in the game because of who they are not.

Hank's 9-10 year old All Star team has 12 players, not 10. Hank is a good coach and the team does consist of the players that stood out in the league. He maybe could have traded a couple of these kids for a couple others but the majority of the kids on the team deserve to be there and they have worked hard. You shouldn't be "dissing" 9-10 year old boys and saying they are not good enough because they have worked hard all year.

It amazes me at how some of you all are acting on this forum!! It seems as though many of you have not realized that life isn't always fair, and not every kid can be THE BEST. Yes, we all think as parents that our children ARE IN FACT the best, but this isn't always true! Kids are picked for travel ball for a reason, because they are good and because you are supposed to play to win and they are the best players for that age group. Rec league teams however, don't have that option really, because ANYONE can play. Everyone plays to win, but that's not the way it always happens. If you could choose who to put on your team and you were the coach, I guarantee you'd do it! Hank is a great guy and has a great family - he by no means would try to intentionally hurt a child, this is just how the system works! So whoever is mad out their because their kid didn't make all-stars or whatever, needs to get a life. If you think your child should have made it and they didn't, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT - obviously from Hank or whatever coach's perspective, your child just isn't ready. Sign him up in ball camps over the summer and get your lazy butt out in the yard or on the field and work with them. Make your child better so that maybe the next time, they will be chosen to participate.

Not speaking for everyone else here, but it would not matter how much we were to work with our kids unless they are in the click.... They will not play. All stars are decided way before the season ever starts. I know for a fact two children who have known for the past two years they will play for the All stars because of who they are. One kid probably deserved it, but the other is no better than my son. Think about it, even someone here has already posted that they played rec leauge for Hank and won the leauge every year. Why do you think that is? I know why, Hank even picks his rec leauge players and bends the rules during the drafts to get them. Pay attention next year and see if the same kids don't end up on his 11/12 year old team that played for the Spiders this year (or at least the ones who he wants). Same goes for at least two other coaches in this baseball leauge.

I think the option on kids should stop and then all teams would be on equal ground. What other two coaches are you referring to.

THE ONLY THING THAT HAS EVER BEEN WRONG WITH MORRISTOWN LEAGUES IS DAVID WILD AND HANK SMITH.
YOU GO TO THESE OTHER TOWNS AND PLAY BALL. THESE ARE THE ONLY NAMES YOU HEAR AND HOW THEY PLAY THEIR POLITICS. I HAVE 2 SONS ONE PLAYED FOR WEST HIGH AND THE OTHER IS IN 13-14 YEAR OLD ALL STARS NOW. I WILL TELL YOU ABOUT POLITICS!!!
I HAVE SEEN FIRST HAND OF WHAT IT CAN DO TO A CHILD. AND THESE 2 MEN ARE ON THE PARKS AND REC BOARDS. WHO'S RUNNING THE SHOW? NOT CRAIG PRICE

I totally agree with you. I think he and know he has and always will stack his teams. This has always upset me. He is a super nice guy, but........ My kid was overlooked twice for all stars because he did not play travel ball or he wasn't so and so's kid (true). Lets face it....the all star team is picked way before the rec season is over. And it is usually the same kids...... It is all in who you know. Oh well...

If you don't like the way Hank coaches his all-star team then take a team in rec-league, beat him, and take your own all-star team. Problem solved.

People can't because he stacks his teams. Gotta give it to him... He is always 3 steps ahead. He scopes it out and finds who he likes.

You can't stack your teams in rec. They do a draft just like the pros. So he must be good to be able to get all the good kids before everybody else even though it goes in rounds. Besides, all of you are complaining about how he coaches and chooses favorites, so why are you mad that your kids aren't playing for him? Seems to me that you all just need something to complain about.

I would like to comment on the Roy Martin part of this blog. I do not agree with this. I know Roy and he really cares about the kids, just like Hank does. He choose to become a head coach of another team so that he would have more of an opportunity to work with kids how he wanted to. Everyone that has played for him has nothing but good to say about him. Sometimes assistance coaches hands are tied when it comes to practices and games. So please don't say anything negative about him unless you really know him. Thanks

Should little leauge allow girls to play baseball after tee-ball or should they have to go to softball. Just a question with a litle thought.

I have seen head coaches that will get good kids by having their parens as assistant coaches. There is nothing wrong with that. BUT, the coaches are there for one year then another parent of another good kid the next. This is done over the course of a few years so that the team will be strong when the right time comes. Also, some kids are told to stay away from the draft so that not all the coaches can see them. This usually happens from coach pitch to minor leauge because most coaches in little leauge and minor leauge have been there a number of years and may not know these kids. This happens when a coach has teams in coach pitch, minor, and little leauges. Yes some coaches will coach all three leauges just to build a team for little leauge. They only give them up when they no longer have use for them and then they leave them wih only 1 or 2 kids returning. They are usually the ones that get little playing time so they return with hope's of getting more playing time.
