On Tuesday morning, July 8th my mother, 62 years of age, was working out at her ‘new gym’, Planet Fitness at the Powder Mill Plaza on Route 10 in Morris Plains. She put her car keys on their communal key rack like everyone else does where there is a sign stating that leaving your keys is “at your own risk.” Mom returned to her car about 40 minutes later and her car alarm was sounding off. She looked at her passenger floor and her purse, hidden under another bag, was gone. Everything was in her purse. Everything.
After frantically going back inside to ask the gym to call the police, a Plant Fitness employee tells her to use her cell phone. A terrific detective arrived to take my mother’s report and was very kind and very sympathetic. Perhaps the Planet Fitness employee could learn something from this detective’s demeanor.
After speaking with the detective, my mom (now with her sister present to console her because this is extremely upsetting) learns that this has happened before to other Planet Fitness clients over the last several months. It’s a scam of sorts. Gym members hang their keys, go workout, and a group of lowlifes (both inside the gym and out) watch where the members go. They take the keys off the rack, hit the unlock and/or panic button and the lowlifes out in the lot watch which vehicle’s lights go on/off or which alarm sounds momentarily. They put the keys back and then their partners in crime have a field day.
It is unbelievable to me that Planet Fitness is unaware of the multiple victims and does absolutely nothing to safeguard their clients against becoming a victim of this repeated crime. For God’s sake, move the key rack behind the customer service desk where it can be protected or give them lockers. At the very least, inform your customers, share your knowledge, post a sign at the rack stating “there have been multiple thefts from the automobiles of our members.” Stand up for your customers, not down.
