Obligatory first lame Mastic joke:

At least when the time comes, no one will have to read *them* their Miranda rights!

Seriously, this is a great program. Nice job!

I have personally seen this program in action and am happy to say I does work ! My kids start asking to go to the library to join the summer reading club as soon as school ends... Thank you Newsday for covering it in your paper.

The one thing that baffles me though is why is there only one other post ( less the stupid attempt at a joke) It seems every time Shirley, Mastic or Mastic beach is in the news all the posts are negative...where are you guys now !!!

Why are all the posts negative? Because every story that has come out of the Mastic/Shirley area has been about some stupid white trash morons doing dumb things.

And because Mastic/Shirley is the white trash capital of Long Island, and it should have been nuked years ago.

Any other questions?

I would have to say that most of Long Island, mainly on the south shore, has white trash the only difference is that mastic has poor white trash.

While Mastic may be the white trash capital there are still plenty of hard working good people from the area. Dont let a small majority speak for everyone, they call that a stereotype!

If it were only a small portion, it would be more acceptable. However, you can't argue that the majority of the Shirley/Mastic/Mastic Beach area is trash.

Let's call a spade a spade. Mastic-Shirley, Mastic Beach are white trash centers. Take a ride through there and then tell me otherwise.

When I was growing up on the Island in the 60s and early 70s, Mastic and Shirley had that certain reputation. As Did Riverhead and Bellport! But I did enjoy the Shirley Drive in. To be serious, there is trash in all communitys, like SouthHampton and the like! They just hide it better.

Oh yes Paul, Brooklyn is a wonderful place! From what I have seen, it is a hell hole and you should be embarressed to say you are from there. Most of the problems that we have here in Mastic and Shirley are from the low lifes who have moved out here from Brooklyn. We suggest you keep your scum there in Brooklyn and quit polluting our community with those dirtbags.

I thought this was suppose to be about a reading program? I was about to comment on how happy I was to hear about something that will benefit the students of the communities for years to come. Instead, it looks as if everyone is bashing a community for a negative past. What good comes from this? Perhaps it is time for us to move forward. Our students in William Floyd and neighboring school districts deserve better than this. That is why we will move forward, for the children!
Perhaps instead of knocking on each other, maybe we should be fighting for our students and making sure they aren't harmed by the impending budget cuts that will force school districts to cut teachers and educational programs.

Times on the Island sure have changed! When I was a Teen, If you couldnt read by the time you were a teenager, you were a certified dumb a__. They were given the option to quit at 16. This worked out well because you didnt have a disruptive element in the classroom to hold everyone else back.
And Mark. dont worry they wont be hurt by the budget cuts! Just the productive members of society will. They will get their check! Dont worry.

When you have drug dens such as 186 Broadway up and running its no wonder people think its all trash.

You're in the wrong forum to vent your hatred of this area.

Let's stay on topic, and stop the mud-slinging - it does no good for anyone.

Maybe try to get kids to read at age 6 or 7 like the rest of the world, don't wait until they are teenagers.
