Millions just for the study. No wonder we can not get anything done. Millions to tell us we put to much c.r.a.p into the water. We allready know that..

The duck farm has been polluting the river for decades. You can stop all the road water run-off and it will still be a mess. This is all because the county bought the development rights to the farm instead of buying the farm! Now this disgusting stinking mess can continue indefinetly. Farming IS an INDUSTRY and it is as bad as any other. Who needs ducks? End duck farming and solve the problem.
As to the sewer issue Mr. Stupid Romaine - the town had a chance to have a sewer district built for them by a developer who wanted to build in north Mastic. The stupid idiots in the area wanted to "preserve" the area and stopped the project. The whole area is blighted - you can't really make it worse - the only place to go is up. You had nothing to lose and you blew it!

Sewers would solve nothing except raise everybody's taxes.
What the County must do to solve the Forge River problem.

1. Ban Aeration off a Pump Truck. What they are doing is Injecting waste into the ground. We are on a Island and almost always a water table is close by.

2. Update Septic Codes. Cesspools are Banned everywhere except Long Island. Has anybody wondered why we have the Highest Cancer rates? Possible a link.

3.Ban the use of Acid. Acid can not be dumped on the ground But it's legal to dump it into a hole in the ground that is close to a water source?

4. In Environmentally sensitive areas like the Forge River, make it code to have a Septic Inspection agreement, and hold the Home owners responsible if they choose not to operate their Onsite systems in a environmentally Friendly way.

5. install Septic Tanks to all systems that do not have them.

6. If a septic pumper's price is too good to be true, it's a possibility that they are illegally dumping what they pump.Hold the Homeowner and the pumper responsible for the clean up.

This is just a start that would clean up a large portion of Suffolk Counties Nitrogen problems.

I commend Newsday's excellent writing on this.

This is a promising step forward for the restoration of the river. Although , it is not even close to adequately meeting the needs of the Forge River. The US Army Corp of Engineers is continuing to wait for a sponsor for the environmental restoration study. If they do not find a matching 1.5 million by next year the federal interest in the project will be dismissed. Sewers are a very promising infursture improvement although, they are expensive and alone will not restore the river completely. An increase in tidal flow as well as dredging the sludge that is already in the river will help restore the river to pristine conditions. It will be expensive but it is a quality of life issue that needs to be addressed, it is detrimental to the health of the residents that surround the river. The town of Brookhaven as well as the county is to blame for poor planning and a lack of infrastructure in the area. They messed it up, they have to clean it up!

The water that feeds the Forge river above the north sunrise service road is pure clean spring water. Run it into a 1.5 mile long open cesspool and you are surprized that it is contaminated. It dosn't take 1.3 million for some political connected firm to figure that out. Like all LI south shore lakes Mill pond is man made, a srteam was damed stopping the flow and creating unatural catch basin. Prior to 1938 the river and Moriches bay were a brackish marsh not a saltwater bay tidal flow had nothing to do with cleaning the river. Like any cesspool unless you pump out the catch basin everything else is a waste of time.

The Forge River would beneift enormously if every politican wasn't using it for their pet projects and trying to get into elective office based on the poor Mastic poster child for high density bad planning...the dead Forge River...shame on these folks. Ask yourself why a well known rich lady editor support dredging the forge river and has all her big rich friends donating to a group with little or no hope of ever doing meaningful restorative work.
