From the article:
"Along with Suffolk, the town of Brookhaven put up half of the $5.6 million paid to the farm's owners as compensation for giving up the rights to develop their residentially zoned parcel and maintain it as a farm in perpetuity."

The county and town paid this farm owner $5.6 mil
to continue raising ducks, but they can not build or develop the property or sell pieces for any development purposes. Makes one wonder what purpose this “purchase” really serves.

Only in the socialist State of New York!

You guys have been posting for months about how high your taxes are and how you can barely afford to live on LI...

Now your fine liberal government has determined it is in your best interest to spend YOUR money buying a farm. Not to develope the farm, but to pay someone to keep raising ducks, whether profitable or not.

The USSR would have been proud of you guys!

Gosh, I guess if you had known, you may have purchased a farm instead of your current home. Think how much better off you would be.

Perhaps you can convince your government masters to pay YOU a million or so to grow corn in your backyard!

You can't make this stuff up.

Okay, the way I see it is the County and the Town just spent 5.6 million dollars to purchase the development rights of a duck farm enabling the farm to continue to pollute the Forge River, a river that is already listed on the New York State Impaired Waters List!!!

Your the one making stuff up, the voters approved this purchase to keep the area nice and rural. In Arizona 85% of the state is public lands and parks, whats the problem? If you dont like preserving nature and open spaces it makes me wonder what you are supporting, oh yeah the developers getting rich and wrecking the town.

Yes... the developers... like the one who was greedy enough to build your home?

BTW, a duck farm is not preserving nature, anymore than preserving a failing General Motors plant is...

A duck farm is INDUSTRY.

If you want to preserve land, why not rip down all those nice homes you build along the water front...

Now,that is what is called "protecting" land where I come from.

Thank you Brookhaven and Suffolk County for trying to keep the charm of the island. So nice to see some that can't be bought by developers! Way to go Levy and Foley!!

The voters of Brookhaven,(the 23% who voted yes or no, the rest of the registered voters or unregistered ignorant and just like to bitch) did not vote to purchase development rights, or development that MIGHT happen. They voted for an environmental bond to purchase lands where development is GOING to happen, lands where development is EMINENT!

This farmer owner just received a windfall. Perhaps payback? He can still sell to a developer, who allows the land to lie fallow, and waits for the right timing. Then any covenants, codicils, restrictions or any other matters are lifted or agreed to in the future, when the land is worth twice as much. This has happened before, is happening now where covenents, etc, are lifted or eased,, and will happen in the future.

What a nice investment.

haha nonsense...clearly you're not familiar with the area. Eastern Suffolk is beautiful and rural, and we're fighting like hell to keep it that way. Now go turn on the televison or take a trip to the mall....and stay in Jersey.

I just drove by and saw the entire farm is vacant, with tall grass and not a duck in sight. Could this be the end of this mess? Maybe we will get a nice waterfront park with a kids play area and a walking trail along the north pond. Even the house are up for sale...looks promising.
