In reading this story in the Intermountain newspaper the thing that I did not understand was "we didn't notify parents because it would cause a panic" Is that a good reason? Not in my book.

The guy was taken into custody almost immediately, what were they supposed to do close down a whole school system with nearly 5,000 kids in it and 600 plus employees over a nut job that was already at Tygart Valley Jail? It sounds to me like it was handled quite well by the school system. Now hire us a good football coach-

Yes but they should have at least done something with the parents and the students who go to the school that is within 10 minutes of his home. We should have been notified, our kids safety should have been up to us as parents.

I can understand that panic and having a bunch of parents rushing to pick of kids for no reason can cause more problems than it solves. What DID upset me VERY much as a parent is the LACK of ANY communication AFTER the fact!! Bail was set low by Coffman and the crazy guy was back on the street the next day...so all weekend we wondered and worried about the safety of our children after the guy was even more defensive (after the arrest). There was no contact, no communication, and we had no idea whether we should keep kids home on Monday to be safe. I am glad nothing happened, but there should have been some kind of communication/reassurance from the BOE that the guy wouldn't get to our kids after he was out on bail (and still is)....... And as far as a football coach, I am sure just as soon as the BIG announcement is made that Eddie Vincent got the job in Upshur County that he interviewed for last week, then it won't be long till the coaching job is posted....

You really think hiring a football coach is more important than this story? Evidently you don't have kids in the schools. I didnot say it wasn't handle properly as far as safety, I said the parents should have been notified.

I agree that the bail was kind of low. Whoever said he was out the next day was misinformed. I just checked the jail website and he is still in there.

No, the football coach thing was tongue-in-cheek, but I don't think that the school system underreacted to this flake either. Had they issued one of those auto-call deals, and it seems 95% of Upshur County receives them when they do- what would they have said? And what even more threatening public reaction would there have been? I can imagine the overreactors thinking Newtown all over again running people over as they sped off to all corners of Upshur County to retrieve their little Johnnys and Susies completely unnecessarily. We have to trust those people who we elect and those who they in turn appoint to take care of our kids.

I guess since you think Lewis should have been notified because of a threat in Upshur you probably think they should have called all the parents in WV!!!

A year or more ago a kid brought a gun to school and they had a code whatever but never told the parents. I called BOE on that and they dismissed me like I was nuts.

This school district needs changed!!! Not sure when a certain persons contract is up but a fish rots from the head, just sayin!

And as for a coach, I heard no interviews have happened yet. Most parents seem to want Bill Williams. Eddie would be a great addition too though. Good luck to both of them.

I have to disagree with the way the BOE handles most conflicts. Parents deserve the courtesy of being notified when something like this happens. If a threat is made and the man is in custody, tell the parents the WHOLE story, you won't have people rushing to pick up their children...some, yes, but most would realize, there WAS a threat, it has been dealt with..

It seems most situations are immediately swept under the rug and many parents are completely unaware. I don't want to be under the illusion that our town is 100% safe and nothing troublesome ever happens. As a parent myself, I want to know what is going on so I don't have a false sense of security. If I have to trust the BOE with the safety of my child, they need to be willing to share these sorts of things.

Once again, Topix is king for those without any facts. As someone posted above and contrary to another ranting poster, Herndon is STILL in jail under a $125,000 bond, which doesn't sound small to me over a voice message he left. Granted it was wrong and scary, but sounds like the BOE handled it by having him arrested immediately. If you want to rant for or against something, why not check your facts first - he has been in jail since the incident, and will probably be there for awhile.

Do you people not relise how many kids there are in upsher county schools? They would still be calling and infoming parents if they would've done things how you guys want. I totaly agree with their actions on this one the guy was apprehended panic was avoided and the school day went uninterupted. Its not they are still hiding this news from everyone they went public and made everyone aware of it sounds to me like everyone is just looking for something to bitch about. But seriously if I knew there were hundreds of scared and angry mothers on the road rushing to the school id be more terrified to be on the road then at the school id rather take my chances with the shooter at least that would only be one stark raving lunitic to deal with instead of hundreds.

The Upshur BOE andschool system doesn't cooperate or communicate anything without having it dragged out of them. They wouldn't spread good news even if they had any.
