Is Morgantown considered safe? Is there an area or part of Morgantown that people tend to stay away from?

Morgantown and the surrounding area is very safe. Although there is crime, many of the things that happen are related to college students and alcohol. Morgantown has received several awards and recognition as one of the most safe and livable cities in the eastern U.S.

All of Morgantown if great, there are very few real, city-type problems here. Even Sunnyside is getting a revamp and a fresh start with the Sunnyside-up Project. You can go to the city website or look at The Dominion Post website to get polices breifs and city information.

I retired and moved to Morgantown several years ago. Although my wife and I had ties to WV, we chose Morgantown for several reasons, mostly because of the healthy economy which in turn has a direct relation to crime. Morgantown still has the small town feel with some big city conveniences. It is not without problems but overall the quality of life is excellent and probably taken for granted by people who haven't lived anywhere else.

South park close to the Exxon station is pretty safe. I lived on Grand Street for 4 years and felt safe no matter what time of day or night I was outside.

A lot of people mention Sunnyside, it is a deplorable part of town that resembles an urban ghetto. Lots of run down houses, trash and litter everywhere. An organization formed a few years ago(Sunnyside Up) attempted to improve the area but little has been done. The majority of the run down rental houses controlled by "slum lords" still prevail. Sadly the reputation of Sunnyside lives on bringing crime and drugs with it. By far it is Morgantown's worst area.

Where are your facts? Making a radical ststement with zero supported information to back it up is kind of wreckless. Local crime statistics say the opposite of what you state. Educate yourself, or better yet, get involved with the community and be proactive if you think things are that bad. It's easier to sit on the sidelines and cry foul than to do something and get involved in the game.

Well, minority enrollment has risen by 30% at the university, and the overall crime rate is up city-wide according to the D.P.

Go figure.

And one of the very few homicides we've had in town this year was a black-on-black killing, and again, go figure.

I hate to sound racist, but well, most of the crimes here are committed by the brothers out of Harlem they bring in here, and the drug trade too. If we want our security back, maybe the university should encourage some of the Harlem brothers to attend Rutgers instead. That would be better for everyone. They're closer to home, and our crime rate stays low.

Just saying that "according to the Dominion Post crime is up" is not statistical information. If you want to use the local paper, that is fine, but also take into account the several articles written about crime being down in Morgantown. Crime has trends and all the big cases that have happened recently have been isolated incidents. I'm not down playing any crime.. But things really are not any different from years past, statistically speaking.

You would have a valid point if you made any damn sense. I'm by no means a grammar Nazi, but damn, you have to draw a line somewhere if your trying to state an argument and get your view across. Proof read or get an education...might be why no one ever took you serious with your claims.

I lived in Morgantown from 2011-2013. I walked around every where, at all hours of the day. I never once had a problem. Although I did carry a knife with me at all times, but that was just a precaution. Just be smart. I even went through Sunnyside practically every day.
