Several years ago West Virginia increased the ABV cap on beer to 12%. Since then there has been an influx of new craft beer to West Virginia, which has caused an incredible increase in craft beers sales. However, there is one large issue. Many breweries that currently distribute their beer in West Virginia are unable to distribute some of their higher gravity beers due to this cap. Because of this many West Virginians are traveling across state lines to track down some of these beers. If this cap was lifted, West Virginians would no longer have to travel to buy their favorite beers and could continue to stimulate West Virginia's economy by purchasing more products locally. Do your part to help change the perception of beer in West Virginia and sign this petition to convince the state to lift its arbitrary ABV cap!

While you're waiting for the legislature for the next several years, you can make plenty of good beer just as you want it if you learn to homebrew, for less expense than shopping out-of-state.
While we're at it, let's ask for a nanobrewery category in the regulations, with an annual license fee of $25, as for farm wineries, instead of the current $1500. It's hard enough doing beer commercially without working several months of the year to pay off the ABC. When production reaches a certain level, then charge more. But let a guy get started before you start charging high fees. I'd have been paying taxes and employing people in a brewery years ago if I could have worked up to it gradually from homebrewing.
