That was a great article. I would like to read the new book on Daniel Boone, but I don't know the name of it.

I think there are some Boones living to the north of Asheville who are Daniel Boone's relatives.

Boone found freedom in Missouri after his land deals and business ventures failed and debtors took everything. He later returned to Kentucky and Virginia to try and pay off debts. He died in Missouri but Kentuckians came and dug up his remains, at least they thought they did. An examination of a skull casting indicates they only got the bones of a former slave. Boone was a slave owner, at one time he was considered to be one of the largest slave owners in VA. His honesty and ethics required him to try and repay all his debts. He spent most of his late years playing and story telling with his grandchildren. Some said he did take a trip to Yellowstone in his later years, a hard journey for an old man. He didn't spend much time in WNC, mostly lived and hunted in VA and KY before moving to MO. He did travel to Florida where he reportedly bought land in Pensecola but couldn't convince his wife to move there.

Interesting factoid, once, when Boone was gone for 2 years on a long hunt, his brother sired a daughter with his wife. He treated the daughter as his own and she was a favorite of his many children.

Not to be contrary but what Boone found in North Carolina didn't last thus his search led westward into Kentucky. Eventually he ended up in Missouri. He didn't like crowds.

It's very difficult to separate Boone the man, from Boone the myth. I remember in grad school the real importance assigned to him was that he the prime example of the break with British culture. He was born a commoner but considered a hero, in American culture.
In his 1992 definitive work, John Mack Faragher tried mightily to sort out the facts. All of Boone's luck and skill kept him alive but his interest lay in making money and he was never successful doing that. He was hounded by creditors all of his life. He seemed always to be trying to pit the colonists against the British, British against the colonist, Spanish against Americans, etc. In short, he was a poor manipulator, and a poorer business man.
I pick at dog enough but I can find no proof of Daniel owning slaves, even though it is mentioned often as such. His son, Daniel Morgan Boone was listed as owning four slaves, in Spanish documents.
As to what was referred to as "Boone's surprise" (Jamima), that even can't be confirmed. It adds some spice to the legend though.
Americans are unique in that they create heroes and then try their best to expose the human frailty of same. It's a lot more fun if we let Fess Parker present the legend.

what a pity these yanks don't understand our rhyming slang, otherwise they'd know what a "daniel boone" is to Londoners.
