No charges in Broughton Hospital patient's death

“And everyone should have access to health care.”

No criminal action will be taken in the February death of a Broughton Hospital patient who died of asphyxia after a staff member sat on his torso. The death of 27-year-old Anthony Lowery, a patient at the mental health hospital in Morganton, was one of the incidents that led the federal government to stop Medicaid and Medicare payments in August.

On Monday, the district attorney's office that serves Burke, Caldwell and Catawba counties said in a letter to the State Bureau of Investigation that it will not charge the staff member who restrained Lowery in the death. Read more

I know because I have had to research on this place for class and the wire mesh screens were installed when the buildings where patients was housed was built. Your brother is lying to you and you just dont want to believe it. You want to go on thinking that someone one picked on your poor little brother while he was sitting around doing nothing and that is no way true. Most likely as others have said, another patient punched him because he was bothering them but you want to keep playing the poor little me card. And as for your question as to who has a mental illness? YOU DO DEBBIE. It appears to run in your family from all the crap you have posted on here. Many many people will agree with me on this one but I have not seen one poster agree with you that your poor little brother was abused by the staff by grabbing him up and throwing him through a window. NO ONE believes that crap cause anyone with half a brain knows its not true. Thats the key right there Debbie.

Debbie, I have spent quite some time reading over your many many posts and I must agree with the others. Your brother has a mental illness and he is playing you with this story.I believe this illness runs in the family and most likely you also have it. Your posts are so confusing, winding, and pretty much untrue. I believe YOU believe it because your brother told you and you dont think he will lie to you but it is very much apparent that he has and still is. His story is NOT TRUE. Its is IMPOSSIBLE TO BE THROWN THROW MESH SCREEN! His and your life would be much better if you informed him that you are aware of his lies. You should make him face up to to the fact that he has been lying for years. The longer you play this game, the more he will play it. This is part of the "family" mental illness. He is a grown man, when you begin to treat him as one and stop babying him, he will do much better.

And to all the other posters: Histrionic personality disorder is characterized by a long-standing pattern of attention seeking behavior and extreme emotionality. Someone with histrionic personality disorder wants to be the center of attention in any group of people, and feel uncomfortable when they are not. While often lively, interesting and sometimes dramatic, they have difficulty when people aren't focused exclusively on them. People with this disorder may be perceived as being shallow, and may engage in sexually seductive or provocating behavior to draw attention to themselves.

Individuals with Histrionic Personality Disorder may have difficulty achieving emotional intimacy in romantic or sexual relationships. Without being aware of it, they often act out a role (e.g., "victim" or "princess") in their relationships to others. They may seek to control their partner through emotional manipulation or seductiveness on one level, whereas displaying a marked dependency on them at another level.

Individuals with this disorder often have impaired relationships with same-sex friends because their sexually provocative interpersonal style may seem a threat to their friends' relationships. These individuals may also alienate friends with demands for constant attention. They often become depressed and upset when they are not the center of attention.

People with histrionic personality disorder may crave novelty, stimulation, and excitement and have a tendency to become bored with their usual routine. These individuals are often intolerant of, or frustrated by, situations that involve delayed gratification, and their actions are often directed at obtaining immediate satisfaction. Although they often initiate a job or project with great enthusiasm, their interest may lag quickly.

In other words, the more you reply to her, the more drama and yarns that totally untrue.
If you ignore her, she will find somewhere to receive the attention she is craving.

I have to laugh at this one ha ha.for one thing I am married have been for 16 years ha ha,okay I do not care for sex at all, believe me I have well enough attention, with 9 kids and 13 grand babies ha ha again,Now as far as my brother goes never said he was a good guy all the time of course he had problems or he would not have been up there in the first place, now, all you all have to hang onto is the part where I told you all he got thrown threw a plate glass window,Which he did,I have no reason to lie or make up any kind of story at all,It happen its true, believe it or not its up to you,Mark you try to sound like you know what you are talking about, but of course you don't and you just made your self look so stupid! And by the way broughton hospital messed my brother up so damn bad he is 60 + years old but he has the mind of a 12 year old, because of schook treatments they gave to him up there,so tell all your friends that work in that hell hole with you, that's the kinda of treatment people get there and one day it will come back on you!One day you all are going to screw with the wrong one and all your bad doings is going to bit you in the asssss.......

Lets give Marks suggestion a try. NO ONE reply to this drama queen and lets see if she will go away. Either she will or she will talk to herself. Another sign of mental illness.

I am like 99 percent of the other posters. This did not happen the way she wants everyone to believe it happened, If it really did in fact happen at all.
Mark pretty much hit the nail on the head and it really does sound just like Debbie.

I wont be posting and I do hope everyone else does the same. Give her a little test here. Being the drama queen attention seeking person she is, she will NOT be able to shut up about this bull. Lets stop feeding her attention seeking need so she will have to look else where.

Just because you believe your brother DOES NOT make it true! That is a large part of your problem Debbie. You have to understand your brother has a mental illness and what he believes and tells you probably is NOT true. After reading all these posts about the wire mesh on the windows, I can not understand HOW you can believe that someone threw him through a window. That is just NOT POSSIBLE. Most likely what happened was he upset another patient and they punched him. He is not going to admit to that it was his fault and probably is laughing behind your back cause you believe the window story. Looks like attention seeking behavior runs in your family. As soon as you realize that his story can not be true and confront him with this lifelong lie, things will be better for both of you.
Just because you don't believe me, don't mean it is not true, because it is!

Debbie, you are really making yourself look pretty stupid with these posts. Many posters has pointed out the reasons this is simply could not have happened the way your brother wants you to believe it happened. NO PHYSICAL WAY! The more posts you make about this totally unbelieveable story, the more people laugh at you. I guess if your brother told you that people from mars landed at broughton and beat him up, you would believe that too. Bless your heart...
Only a very very few believes you. Most likelyPatients themselves believe you. No NORMAL person with half a brain does.

You are just mean, so judging of someone that you don't know. I could almost guess you are a staff member and if you are or not-you need to seek help for you bulldog ways and ability to criticize another breathing soul. Tonight, I choose to pray for mean, ignorant souls like yourself that probably has the ability to act

Debbie,

You know that I love everything you stand for and the stad you take on abuse in mental facilities. When I went to visit my daughter many, many times the one memory I have is the wire mesh within the glass. It stood out to me because my uncle is a supplier for the windows in West Jefferson. After Lena was placed and I was scared she would jump. He reassured me that even if she could break a window the mesh would catch her, as it is 12 gauge wire. Just something to think about. When we have traumatic childhoods some memories become distorted. I have PTSD from growing up with a Vietnam vet and some memories are a bit foggy due to pure survival instinct. Is it possible that perhaps you brothers hospitalization happened during you pivotal years growing up and like myself I imagined(although, sometimes real) that the events are a bit more dramatic than what took place? Not saying that the events didn't happen, but after much therapy, I realized the base of my memory happened, but my perception was sometimes way off. I'm pretty sure that it was survival instincts kicked in by overwhelming fear. Perhaps, you were very afraid of what was going to happen to you or your brother. Fear to the point you feel as if your life or someone else is a cruel and terrible thing to experience and I'm not sure anyone ever gets over living a far based lifestyle. Hope I did not offend youDebbie, I have just thought about you a lot and needed to get that off my chest.

Lisa ,Thank you so much for your kind reply, thank you for your understanding, the part about my brother being throw threw a window is indeed true, remember he was there in the 1970s,I know a lot has changed since then.I don't know where in the hosp that it happen, but it really did happen.I have had a lot of stuff happen to me in my past, the only thing that i suffer from is, panic anxiety attacks,Which thank God are under control now, there is nothing ESL wrong with me.I am how ever sorry for all the sad stuff that has happen to you,God be with you sweetie, and you know he is and he will give you the strength you need to over come your problems. I do know that, that happen to my brother a lot of stuff happen to him in broghton hosp. He has scars all over his body (which he didn't have before he went there) to prove what he said is true.I have seen them,I would not lie I have no reason to.Im not going to give up this is something, I really believe in,just because someone is mentally ill does not mean they do not know what they are talking about. It just means they need someone who cares and are trained to help them.with there problems that they do not understand, and know how to handle

Debbie, I believe Lisa hit the nail on the head. Your brothers memories is a bit foggy and you have became wrapped up in his distorted memories. Some people, after telling a story over the years actually begin to believe it really did happen that way when in reality, there is no possible way for it to have happened. So many people have tried to explain this to you but for some reason, you continue to believe the unbelievable. Some people really need a reality ck some times before they really make fools out of themselves.
