“And everyone should have access to health care.”

No criminal action will be taken in the February death of a Broughton Hospital patient who died of asphyxia after a staff member sat on his torso. The death of 27-year-old Anthony Lowery, a patient at the mental health hospital in Morganton, was one of the incidents that led the federal government to stop Medicaid and Medicare payments in August.

On Monday, the district attorney's office that serves Burke, Caldwell and Catawba counties said in a letter to the State Bureau of Investigation that it will not charge the staff member who restrained Lowery in the death. Read more

<quoted text>If indeed that did happen, its probably cause the staff provoked the pt,to do that,nd i do not think any staff has been killed at Broughton hosp, but It is a known fact that pts have been killed and are still being killed also severely abused, that's facts, now where is the proof that any staff has been killed?injured yes killed no.
woman, you either have your head in a hole or NEVER sat foot on a ward at Broughton.I bet you are just believing the stories that your mentally ill family has told you and NEVER spent any time on a ward to see how the patients are treated. Probably one of the typical family members who dumps their family off never to come back and visit or anything till they are discharged. After reading your posts, i pretty much figure that is what happened. Since you cant seem to see THE WIRE MESH SCREENS ON ALL THE WINDOWS! Or you are blind as a bat.

Well, I was a patient in the childrens ward back in 2008. Right off the bat the place creeped me out. I remember the small dirty cold room they bring you in to check you out. I also remember being scared to death of all the patients in there, they would always pull my hair or try to throw stuff at me like food or books etc. I got use to the place though, everything was fine when I started going upstairs to school. Then they would take us outside to the gated courtyard to do activities which was nice. Certain days out of the week we would have to walk pass the older patients which was terrifying just to go to the art room or pool room. I liked going to mr. Kings class because he didn't treat me like I was insane, because I wasn't. I was there because I abused drugs and alchol and got a bit crazy. Guess they didn't know what else to do with me.. I also remember when they brought snakes, that's the day I left. And I didn't get to see the true beauty of this building until then, the character and historical background was amazing, the bathrooms didn't look like they'd been changed since the place was built tub was huge and hallways looked exactly like the pictures taken that I saw in the 1920's wow. Overall my experience was good. I heard all the wacky stuff goes on in the adult wards.

I was at Broughton, patients did a lot of the "grunt" work like make up beds daily and we got paid in blue plastic tokens that were only good at the commissary.

That was back when the prevailing medical "knowledge" of the time was to basically give anti psychotics to EVERYONE. One poor old dude who was a "lifer" (A ward of the state) wandered off somewhere in the hundreds of acres and, zonked out on meds and not knowing how to get back, died in his sleep that night.

Imagine a time when that place had a patient load of 4,000.

Everything that is implimented at Broughton Hospital is done by doctor's orders. Patient advocates are all through the hospital at any given time and are prone to walk on the hall unannounced.

Patients are not allowed to be stripped naked by the staff, and if the patients strip off themselves, they are redirected to their rooms if they refuse to put on clothes. Patients are not restrained in four point restraints with the patient naked.

True Justice, I disagree 100% Since this thread was started dozens of people have been able to vent, many of them after years of silence, about the horrors of the place...............

Debbie ,who started the crap, will never let it die down until everyone believes her crap. I doubt that will ever happen. She can believe whatever she wants but anyone with half a brain will KNOW that this yarn is just a tale from a mental patient looking to make the family feel guilty for dumping him there instead of taking care of them at home.

It has been proven many times over that mental illness runs in families. Debbie is proving this point quite well on here with her posts.
Anyone with any common sense knows you really can not believe what a mental patient tells you. As someone else said, they will tell you anything to make you feel guilty for putting them away. Most of them do not belong on the streets because they are dangerous.Debbie believes her brother was thrown through a window. A WINDOW THAT HAS A WIRE MESH SCREEN OVER IT! Now, stop and think about that. Just how is this possible? ITS NOT!
