Burke County React

As we digest property tax increases, I have some questions. I continue to hear comments concerning Burke County React.
Frankly this surprises me since this is a volunteer organization, and reportedly receives $35,000 dollars in taxpayer money, but the shocking thing to me is a lack of accountability allowing some officers compensation and salary as much as 1/3 or more of the total budget! In these very difficult times, I must ask why? How much are these officers paid? I hear a recent budget shows $13,000 dollars. Is this true?
Some (side)“agreement” years ago allows money to “offset” time lost from work for top officers to attend meetings, increase funding sources and better manage things. Really! Does this require a THIRD or more of their funding? I hear vehicles owned by React are driven and used as if they are personally owned by certain members.
Is Burke County React being totally transparent? The only budget information I can find about React appears on the Burke County Website. While taxpayers like me face a 16 to 21% increase in property taxes, I must ask, have commissioners investigated this information. If not, why not? Many people in Burke County do not know who or what React is, and no public disclosure nor community encouragement attempts to gain members for this team. They have a website, apparently no black people serve on this team; however, Burke County has black people paying taxes like everyone else. React seems to be a “Private” Club, but accepts taxpayer money without hesitation. The county manager and commissioners are aware of this, but still taxpayers provide the “majority” of React’s budget while citizens are unaware how to apply to volunteer on this team. Is this the “good ‘ole boy” system or what? If taxpayers are giving money they should get public disclosure showing how the money is spent. I am told comments regularly heard at meetings endorse and encourage political candidates. Burke County React is not a political organization, and assists ALL people, so why would they ‘risk’ losing their 501c3 non-profit status by violating the rules and campaigning in this manner? In these hard times, someone should be asking questions here. Call your commissioners and demand to know what is going on at Burke County React.
