This is outrageous we should protest her ever teaching again. There should be criminal charges brought against her.

Why charge her? Putting the mental child in a box just calmed him down.

Do that to your child at home and see what happens. You would be put in jail and DSS would take all of your children. And I can tell you have no respect for the handicapped or you would not refer to them as mental.

you are either the mom or a friend of the mom, and while I don't condone this method, I am hearing that the mother was well aware of what was going on, and only chose to make an issue about it after some prodding.....there's a lot more to this story.....it will all come out.

Do you get in a box to calm down? Your name should be dumbo! The child had physical disabilities, not mental, theres a difference! Your mental! You need to be boxed, taped shut, and sent to BFE!Have a nice day!

Poor move by the school system. In any business or entity moving your problems and not dealing with them never works. How did it work out for the Catholic Church moving the molesting priests?

No I don't know her but I have a handicapped child that is almost the same as Jacob and I can assure you if that were my child that teacher would not have been able to teach for a while after I got a hold of her. You are probably another teacher that belongs no where near children.

do you know why the child has this mental disability? Figure that out first, you'll be surprised.

Do you wonder why the teacher was allowed to go back to work?? Think about it, the school system didn't just do it b/c it would be good PR.
You have no idea

I don't know the kid, his parents or any of his family. I also do not have a child with disabilities. I did however spend over 10 years of my life working in a facility for mentally handicapped people. I can tell you that if something like this had taken place in that or any other health care facility, the person who did it would be not only fired but would be in a heap of trouble as well. Some people lack empathy, and apparently this teacher is one of them. I can tell you that if my child who is considered "normal" was ever put in a box at school as a form of discipline I would be irate. Can you imagine knowing your child who could not speak up for himself, help himself or defend himself against this adult "teacher" who is supposed to be looking out for his best interest being placed in a dark box in front of others and left there until he calms down? On top of all of that, finding out that the "teacher" is now being allowed to have the opportunity to "educate" other children must be devastating to his parents.

First off, I do not know the family, teacher, student nor am I in the school system.

With EC children it is very helpful to give them their own space such as a "cool down zone". This is all this teacher was trying to do. Yes, it was wrong and was not an approved method by the school system but she should not be fired. Appropriate action was taken by the school system per their protocols. The news media has taken this story and blown it way out of proportion. This teacher is obviously an advocate for her students in trying to help find ways to calm them down

Also, you cant compare priest molesting children to a teacher making a error of judgement.....that is apples vs oranges.

She has a BA in Sociology and Psychology you can't tell me she didn't know not to do this. Also it is in his IEP that he is to be took outside and walked around when he needs a cool down time. What is the use to have an IEP if it is just being used as a doily. If it is not on the IEP then it is not acceptable to do it. You also can't get me to believe there is no way the principle didn't know it was going on.

I never said the teacher molested the student, however the principle of moving this teacher is very similar to that of the Catholic church moving molesting priests to another parish. It would be in another analogy like a company moving a subpar salesman to another route.
The problem personnel remain, others have to deal with the hierarchy being unwilling to deal with the offending employee.
i stand by this idea.

I must also submit that while the child may not have been molested, the incident likely meets the definition of abuse by the state for unlawful confinement.

Here is how to go about protesting this "transfer" from one school to another in the same county school system in hopes of things just falling silent.

You can also of course remember this stuff next time you have a chance to vote for school board memebers.

What a bunch of Idiots, The child was not locked in a box and the child was not abused in any way.
The teacher should get a pay raise. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with what she did.
The child was having an emotional outburst and was asked to set in the box until he calmed down. The child was told to come out as soon as he felt he was calmed down enough to re-join the group.
The child could have left the box at any time.

The recommended procedure for dealing with children with this type of disorder is to give them a cool down period. They have to learn to control their emotions. Usually it is a corner of the room surrounded by book cases or some other barrier but I have no problem with a big refrigerator box. Parents with these types of children understand this.

All that has happened here is the school lost one of its best teachers because a bunch of do-gooders jumped to the wrong conclusions.

I prefer the cardboard box over other methods. I personally know of a similar situation where the student was having an outburst and the teacher would not let the child have a cool down period. She kept insisting he obey her orders and kept trying to force him to do what she wanted. This made matters much worse. When the parent arrived she found 4 teachers pinning her child to the floor and one of the four teachers actually setting on his chest.

I'm concerned about what the replacement teacher will do in this situation.

First off.....exactly who is jumping to wrong conclusions here? This child has a brain injury that does not allow him to understand how to control his emotions. Putting him in a dark secluded place is not the answer....that is what the procedures allowed by his parents are for. Also, the boy could not come out whenever he wanted.....he is wheelchair bound and paralyzed on one whole side of his body. If you truely believe that this teacher did nothing wrong, then maybe you should consider how you would feel if a cop locked you in a cell, turned out the lights, and left you there, simply because you irritated him. Would you then think that your rights had been violated? What this teacher did violates seclusion and restraint laws, and for most people, it is morally appalling. Even after this child being in her class for several months, she still thought him capable of thinking and understanding situations just like any "normal" child.....shame on her....and shame on whoever thinks that this was acceptable.
