A lot of the criticism is from when people spend the food stamps on expensive stuff, then proceed to complain about how they don't get enough to "survive". Just like those who complain about food banks being no help, just because they don't like what's available.
But if someone accepts what benefits they receive, they're free to use them however they want - that is a flaw in the system. But don't bitch about needing more after you've blown what you got.
I agree. It is horrible the way people beg for stuff then complain because they didnt receive high priced meat for free. There is a huge difference in WANT AND NEED!If they were indeed reallllllly starving, they would be thankful for anything they received. Not complain because it was t bone steaks. Beggers are so greedy!!!

Its funny that if you go to say Food Lion or Lowes (when Lowes was here)both places fairly high priced unless you coupon heavily and buy just whats on sale that week or use a store reward card, you would see tons of people breaking out the EBT in line buying several hundred dollars worth of stuff, a lot of junk food, name brand items, choice cuts of steak, low fat content ground beef, of course they would pay cash for the cases of beer and or carton of smokes. The one thing I noticed was none of them used coupons or was carrying a sales flyer.

I on the other hand do a lot of shopping at Aldi which you would think was made for EBT because it is so low cost and almost all generic. Most of the people I see shopping there are paying with their own money. I use coupons, use store reward cards and base my shopping off store sale flyers.

The difference is I am spending my money, they are also spending my money LOL so they could care less. They never will care and as long is its free they will always take it. Maybe if the Government goes into default some of these people will learn what a budget is and how to shop thrifty. I work for a living so I dont depend on the Government to live, let it go bust. Come and try to take my stuff and I will have mine plus get yours too. Just thinning the heard.

I agree. You can basically look at the persons cart and tell if they are spending their own money or using food stamps. The ones who are spending their own money, you will find store brands, cheaper cuts of meat, hot dogs and such. But if they are using food stamps, you will find name brand cereals, high priced packages of meats and such. Then they will complain that they dont receive enough food stamps to make it through the month. So off to the food bank they go and then complain because it is not name brand items that they are getting for FREE! Back yrs ago, before food stamps, people made do with what they grew. The didnt EXPECT the goverment to provide food and housing for them and their family. The KNEW they had to provide for themselves and they did! AND they didnt keep having kids, expecting someone else to pay for them. Food stamps came along and they are like " Hey! I dont have to worry about feeding my family now! The heck with growing veggies! The government will provide for us!" Its horrible the way most people on food stamps use them. They were originally made to give a hand up to people who were in a hard place, not a way of live as MOST of them see it.

I remember when it was next to impossible to get food stamp benefits and people went to the fair grounds to get butter, welfare cheese, peanut butter, rice and beans. People weren't too good to eat beans and potatoes back then. If things keep on like they are now, there will be a time that people will gladly take those beans and potatoes.

Sodas are empty calories. Chips cookies and snack crackers have no nutrition, and if anything, all of this actually makes a person hungrier.

I guarantee you I could take the average monthly SNAP allotment and buy groceries that would last me 6 months.

I agree. I really think people who receive food stamps should either have someone assigned to them to shop for them or have maybe several stores ONLY that accepts stamps and in those stores would NOT be t bones steaks and such. Most people who work every day can not afford high priced meats but then they get to stand in line with their cart with off brand items and cheap meat and watch someone ck out all name brand stuff and steaks and pay with food stamps.. People are not entitled to food stamps but most of them that are on them think they are.

I have been on food stamps before. At the time I was on them, I received $150 a month for just myself.(I actually thought then and still do that $150 was way too much for 1 person for 1 month for the things a person needs to be eating). I knew that I wasn't going to be on them long term and planned my buying accordingly. When I started a job and food stamps ended, I had no need for panic-I had a good enough supply to last me until I got my first pay check. My freezer wasn't filled with prime cuts of meat or ice cream-I had a few packages of reduced priced meats that I bought on sale. I actually think there were benefits left on the card when I cut it up once I got my first paycheck from the new job.(This has been several years ago) Just because it is there and a person has access doesn't mean that the benefits have to be used. I got off of them as soon as possible-I felt like I was taking food away from someone else who had a need worse than I did.

Now see you are the type of person I wouldn't worry once about using food stamps. You are what they were designed for and you acted like a responsible human being and a responsible citizen about it... good for you. I could have easily got them once in my life when I was unemployed then the job I found to make ends meet was low paying but I hated the welfare system so much I just said the heck with it. I suffered and honestly I probably should have used them, I have payed taxes since I was old enough to but I just wanted to see if I could make it. I stopped smoking, stopped making extra trips in my car to save fuel, stopped drinking any beer or eating out, cut my cable off and other luxuries I didn't need. I had to drastically adjust my life but that's what many on welfare today refuse to do. A lot I have seen on it today have luxuries that working people have and most of their cash is spent on crap they dont need because they dont have to buy groceries, a lot live a drama filled life of drinking and partying which also bring about the consequences associated with those decisions like court, fines and bail.

All i know is, that i am a single parent taking care of 3 children with only one income. My children and i have been eating at the homes of our family members for the past 3 weeks. I can't afford to buy groceries due to me paying the cost of living(bills). I'm grateful that the school serves breakfast and lunchso during the week it's less stressful, but when the week end comes around i struggle trying to feed my kids all three meals a day. All i want is for someone to see and walk a mile in my shoe s. I ambeing forced to neglect my kids. Now where is the right in that.

I had to go through this waiting period in March, now it is renewel time and I be damned if I don't have to go through the same crapp and delays I did in March. Going to foodbanks is a waste of gas I do not have. And knowbody will tell me why I have to go through this for the second time so if you get delayed one time wait six months and you will go through it again. Sinceraly Pissed

Hey retard did you even bother to read the other persons original post or can you read. As for me I have been unemployed and hungry and I have yet to use the government dole to feed myself or my kids that I created and is MY responsibility to feed. Its not up to the government which if you had payed attention in civics class is OF the people and BY the people. This means that as a tax payer I am part of the government and its part of my money and my interest in where it goes.

I am sick and damn tired of mofo's thinking they are entitled to anything from the rest of us. I didn't tell you to make kids you couldn't afford to feed. I didn't tell you to fluck off in school and become a loser that couldn't support themselves. Really a God given right to have food stamps? Where the fluck do you mofo's get off thinking you have a God given right to food stamps just cause you live in 'Murica. I too almost wish the government would go bankrupt just to see what you tards would do then and I hope you do riot because then we would have even less of you people around to drag us down when its over. Some people really need it and that's fine but its not a damn way of life and you are certainly not entitled to it.

Not to mention, anyone still using the excuse of being laid off 9 YEARS AGO has much bigger issues to deal with than delayed food stamp benefits.

I don't understand why all the people I see using the food stamp cards are big and fat. There was a picture of people lined up at the Mission Station for their hand out of food and most of them were fat as well. If you people wouldn't eat like hogs perhaps your food would last longer and you wouldn't be sucking so hard on the government tit.

That goes back to the cookies, ice cream, potato chips and junk food consumption.

People aren't being honest if they say that they cannot afford to eat healthier when they can purchase a pound of carrots for $1, a head of cabbage for $1, onions $2.25 a bag, greens $1.25 for a good size bunch, and I could go on and on concerning the produce section of the grocery store. What it comes down to is wise choice making to make the dollar stretch. All the veggies I listed above combined are the same price as one bag of Doritos.

Oh, and another thing? Don't throw food out after just having one meal of it. If you don't want it within the next day or so of preparing it, freeze it and reheat it on a day you don't feel like cooking. Prepare foods that can be turned into something different the next day-chicken can be stretched three days by baking a whole chicken for the first meal, taking the left over meat off the bone and make tacos/fajitas/enchiladas the second meal, and for the third meal, boil the rest of the meat off the carcass for chicken soup.

Another good food for the same is meatloaf-which can be turned into spaghetti sauce and sloppy joes.

Just a few examples of making things stretch.

They aren't fat because they eat a lot, they're fat because they are lazy (ok, it's typically a combination of the two, but I digress). And being lazy is why they don't have a job that pays enough for them to buy their own food in the first place...
