<quoted text>The TAR is the record teachers completed on eac student. A complete failure NO a complete success NO.. A waste of money YES just as food stamps and welfare and the almighty Erned Income Credit that allows people to work a basic single figure income and pays 10,000 or more to parents of children.. Now this is a waste of tax payers money!!!!!!!!
Do not judge all centers based on the one you worked for. I have worked for both contract and federal. The thing is if you want to do wrong and get paid for it then that is on you, not the young people you were cheating out of an education. Job Corps is not a waste of any money, but the higher ups in DOL need to be held accountable because when the shortfall came to light they feld DC like a bunch of birds leaving the centers to clean up their mess.

1. Pack lite. Don't worry about soap, toothpaste, toobrushes, towels, wash rags, etc. They supply all of that. Bring an electric razor though.
2 Read up on unarmed self defense tactics. 1,001 Fighting Secrets is a good book for beginners. Whatever book you get read it 2 to 3 times.
3. Don't date or sleep with the girls. There dysfunctional. If your a girl vice versa. If your gay or lesbian than just stay out of relationships at job corps because the people there are messed up regardless of sexual orientation.
4. Bring Steel toe boots and where them everywhere. Bring a kubaton is made out of fiberglass or wood. Something that is undetectable by magnetometers.
5. Plan ahead. Enlist in the military or start applying to colleges as soon as you enter the job corps program. Nothing feels worse than being separated from the program with no where else to go but back home with your parents or back to the streets or the salvation army or something.
What job corp did you attended ?

Since this is the most active area on the internet about job corps i ask you all (and i will continue to do so until i leave)what should i bring with me to turner jc? I already have clothes and personal hygiene items (including an awesome egyptian cotton towel). I will bring my mp3 player and maybe my too old to steal laptop. Should i bring anything else? Lock for locker? Fabric softener? Any and all replys will be greatly appriciated.
Looks like you have all the bases covered for going Turner. I'd leave the Egyptian cotton towel at home or not tell anyone of its value. As far as bring anything else - bring an attitude of WANTING succeed and remember Job Corps is a no-out-of-pocket education and training program. Expect a diverse student and staff environment...and just know that there are rules and no matter how stupid you might think they are - they are designed for your safety and the safety of others! Our jobs as staff members at Job Corps is to get you trained for the workforce and to prepare you for an independent lifestyle. Most students I have come across that don't like their Job Corps experience are the same students who just don't want to follow the rules. They are the young people who detract from the learning of other and are eventually terminated. One bit of advice - use this time to explore and as a stepping stone to college, military or a trade related job to maximize your potential. And, Good Luck!

As a Job Corps Vocational instructor for almost a year I have scene bad things and great things. Its all in the attitude in which the student takes it to start with. Yes there are some issues on center and they are dealt with, the students do not like this, as a result they think that staff are against them. But when you see a former "street thug" on the phone with his mother after getting a GED or a trade completion, small positives out weigh the negatives. Remember most of the negatives would be in the lives of a majority of these students' lives outside of Job Corp. The biggest obstacle to Job Corps is funding. My class alot of things I would love to teach we cannot afford the materials to get students working on it. Also you have people working there to help benefit the youths, and you have the people that are there for just a job. If all students would go and do what they are there for there would be no issues. As an instructor I have the issues I have to deal with on a day to day basis come from things that happen while students are at the dorm and not in class. As far as getting into the trade of your choice, you do have to test at a certain Grade level before you are allowed to enter that trade. And if you keep your nose clean and do what you are there for it is a great place. Myself if I had known about Job Corps when I was in that age group I would have enrolled. The pay you hear former students talk about is low, but that is taxes and other fees taken out. Which come tax time helps you get more taxes back. So take what you want from what I have posted, but just remember this you get out of Job Corps exactly what you put into it. You work hard you can go to college through job corps, and the advance training programs they offer are some seriously great hands on training, and with hard work can lead to a great career.
PS. Some students and former students I have seen post on here, with the grammar and spelling you use on here you should understand why Job Corps has the academic program that it does.
Its all about employability and accountability.
