Job Corps is worth a second look

Mar 22, 2009 Full story: Kentucky.com 587

I know teachers who received pink slips last year and haven't found work yet. I also have unemployed friends who ran training programs to help others find work and now are fighting the sense of uselessness that sometimes accompanies joblessness.

i currently attend blue ridge jobs corps, its an all girls school and its all medical trades. im already certified in CNA (nursing asst.). Besides Cna they offer MA(medical asst.) and MOS(medical office support). The easiest trade to complete in my opinion is Cna and most girls pick this choice, However i woundn't encourage you to pick it just because its "easier" you should pick something that fits your interest otherwise your just waisting your time. BRJCC also has an LPN program u can go into its considered advanced training and you have to be Certified in NA before u take up this trade and this option isnt so easy to get into and stay in, you have to meet certain requirements to get into the Lpn program and pass your tests to stay in it. Theres also smaller trades you can go into after Cna , Mos or Ma . you can do all trades if you want. Enough about that the school itself is Okay. I liked it more when i first came then i gradually got tired of being here LOL but its a good job corps to go into afterall it is the #1 job corps in the nation. The plus about this job corps is that its located in a smalltown so after the training day and on the weekends they let u wonder off in the town. They have a Transit(small bus) which is only 50cents and a cab which is only $4 to go anywhere in the town. Theres not much things to get into as there is back at home. They have a Public Library and walmart and couple food places you can eat at. The center has a rec where you can watch tv/movies , play video games (xbox,wii,ps3), they have pool tables and hockey etc. Now Just to state some random things that i think people who are interested in this program would want to know... There is not alot of fighting going on on this center, They will send you home for fighting. I have been here for about 7months and have only seen about 3fights and they weren't even that serious. The girls here are nice, some can be mean but you will find a friend around here eventually. Its best to not gossip and just know who your associates are Dont try to be friends with everyone and please everyone that will be your downfall. This year they have made changes to the school because of budget cuts like the new people coming in are only getting paid $25 and thats it the school is no Longer raising the pay. I been here before the change so im getting $47 which is the most they pay. After you complete a trade you can apply for a job or something if you need more money. The food is sometimes good sometimes bad and you will eventually get tired of it. I advise you to buy snacks n noodles to keep you satisfied. The uniform here are scrubs after the training day you can change into your regular clothes if you want... Any other questions?

Jennifer I hope you have done well. I was an Instructor from 87-99. I am sure you remember the center having many students, I think around 2400 in 1989. I heard they are currently at 1200 and will be reducing it by half soon. I couldn't imagine teaching with that low of a number. The welding vocation carried around 30 per class at that time..

As a Job Corps Vocational instructor for almost a year I have scene bad things and great things. Its all in the attitude in which the student takes it to start with. Yes there are some issues on center and they are dealt with, the students do not like this, as a result they think that staff are against them. But when you see a former "street thug" on the phone with his mother after getting a GED or a trade completion, small positives out weigh the negatives. Remember most of the negatives would be in the lives of a majority of these students' lives outside of Job Corp. The biggest obstacle to Job Corps is funding. My class alot of things I would love to teach we cannot afford the materials to get students working on it. Also you have people working there to help benefit the youths, and you have the people that are there for just a job. If all students would go and do what they are there for there would be no issues. As an instructor I have the issues I have to deal with on a day to day basis come from things that happen while students are at the dorm and not in class. As far as getting into the trade of your choice, you do have to test at a certain Grade level before you are allowed to enter that trade. And if you keep your nose clean and do what you are there for it is a great place. Myself if I had known about Job Corps when I was in that age group I would have enrolled. The pay you hear former students talk about is low, but that is taxes and other fees taken out. Which come tax time helps you get more taxes back. So take what you want from what I have posted, but just remember this you get out of Job Corps exactly what you put into it. You work hard you can go to college through job corps, and the advance training programs they offer are some seriously great hands on training, and with hard work can lead to a great career.

PS. Some students and former students I have seen post on here, with the grammar and spelling you use on here you should understand why Job Corps has the academic program that it does.

Its all about employability and accountability.

I want to join job corps again but a while ago I went more than a year ago and I left on my own because I was being harassed by a male but now I'm almost homeless , I'm a cna but I can't find wrk and I was wondering if I can go back for a trade and if they would help me get a Job while I attend . But idk if they'll accept me back but I'm really ready to get on my feet and do the right thing . I'm 18 and I need to get my life together
If you left on good terms, you can get back in. Especially if you are homeless or at that state. I am a vocational Instructor at a Job Corps center in WV and you should call as soon as you can. They will still have your file at the center you had, or if you want another trade that isnt offered at that center they should help you get to another center. And please when issues like that if they happen again talk to the counselor and administration to help eliminate bullying and harassment at that center

Job Corps is a victim of spending by 4 years of Obama, Ironic Job Corps losing funding by the first ( half ) black president guess its not a priority by the current administration. Job Corps admin " cooked the books" on completions, skill levels and so on. We all knew it was a scam but as others I rode the gravy train as an instructor for several years until I started making too much money according to Res-care what a joke of an outfit they were. In closing it's time to shut down for as much money spent on training you get very little in return. I had managers would tell me "keep em 6 weeks" and make them a completer. You all remember the training achievement record. I filled out thousands of those things showing the student was satisfactory in all requirements, when in fact he/she slept for 6 weeks in my class. Hey doing what my manager said. It's that way all the way to the center director. so taxpayer that is what you got for all the years of Job corps not all 95%. I was there 20 + years . Chuck Woolsey was my first boss for all you old timers...

The TAR is the record teachers completed on eac student. A complete failure NO a complete success NO.. A waste of money YES just as food stamps and welfare and the almighty Erned Income Credit that allows people to work a basic single figure income and pays 10,000 or more to parents of children.. Now this is a waste of tax payers money!!!!!!!!

Thank you Hurt 46. I figured someone would be kind enough to call out my contradicting post. I Didn't think anyone would be lame enough to do to during the superbowl though.

Good looking out.

My Granddaughter is wanting to join the job corps and study culinary arts. She hasn't been in any trouble and is an honor student that will be a senior this fall. She is simply ready to do something with her life and wants a change. Can we choose the facility she wants to enroll at? We have read a lot about each of the locations and Pine Knot seems to be above average. She lives in West Tennessee and we definitely don't want Memphis. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!
Rita (redrita0_4@yahoo.com)
No you cant choose. Not all job corps have the same classes. She would be put where she fits best.
