The wife of a 22-year-old man accused in a weekend shooting that killed a Menifee teen is now facing a murder charge along with her husband, authorities said.
Lilia Teresa Rivas, 28, was arrested Thursday at her home in the unincorporated Meadowbrook area near Perris, Riverside County sheriff's officials said. She was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside on suspicion of murder, attempted murder and other charges, jail records show
Rivas was charged Wednesday with being an accessory to murder in a shooting that killed Adrian Acosta, 16, and wounded his 15-year-old brother, Raul Acosta, court records show. Additional charges were filed Thursday.
Her husband, Walter Morales Cortez, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to murder and attempted murder.
Deputies were called to Jefferson Avenue and Antelope Road in the Romoland area of Menifee early Saturday and found Adrian lying dead in a pool of blood, according to an investigator's statement in support of an arrest warrant. Raul was shot once in the chest, but survived. A family member told investigators that Adrian and Cortez are affiliated with rival neighborhood gangs, Investigator Ed Baeza wrote.
The Acostas had been hanging out that night with friends and were walking on Antelope Road, when Adrian got into a fight with Cortez and Rivas, court records state. As Raul tried to pull his brother away, Cortez shot them both, the statement says. A witness told investigators that Cortez fired at the direction of his wife, court records say.
Cortez was arrested early Monday.
A tearful Rivas attended Cortez's arraignment Wednesday at the Southwest Justice Center in French Valley. Outside the courtroom, Rivas said her husband was being blamed by rival gang members for something he didn't do. Rivas said she and Cortez were at a friend's home in Riverside when the shooting occurred.
"It's nothing to do with us," she said Wednesday. "We weren't even there."
Rivas said she was concerned for the safety of her children, adding that her family has received threats of retribution.
According to the investigator's statement, Rivas' cellphone records suggest they were in the Romoland area, not Riverside, at the time of the shooting.
