A gang member was sentenced to life in state prison without the possibility of parole Friday for the 2002 murder of a 13-year-old Riverside boy in a racially motivated shooting.

Daniel Murillo Salgado, 31, looked straight ahead from the counsel table as the mother and two sisters of the victim, Markess Lancaster, stood a few feet behind him to express the loss and the pain he had caused the family.

"You, Daniel, and only you, murdered Markess. You took away our lifeline forever," Lisa Turner, Markess' mother, said tearfully in court.

Daniel Murillo Salgado talks with his attorney before being sentenced to life for the slaying of 13-year-old Markess Lancaster in 2002. Markess was killed during a string of violence between members of a Hispanic and a black gang during summer and fall 2002. Police said Markess was not a gang member, but an innocent victim.

Two of Markess' sisters, Unique Lancaster and Marrissa Vance, each called Salgado a "monster."

"Because of you my brother will never get to meet his nephew; because of you my brother never got to graduate from high school; my brother never got to go to prom," Unique Lancaster said. "There's so much he is not going to be able to see because you took his life at such a young age, and because of that you are a monster to me."

Members of Salgado's family were seated in the back of the courtroom, but chose not to address the court.

Prosecutors said Salgado was the triggerman in the Oct. 5, 2002 shooting.

Investigators believe Markess, an honors student at University Heights Middle School, was targeted because he was black. He was fatally shot while riding in a car with his brother and his brother's friend.

Authorities said the gunfire came from a vehicle that pulled alongside.

Jurors also convicted Salgado of two counts of attempted murder and found the attack on each victim was a hate crime. They also found the shootings were done as a violent gang activity.

Riverside County Superior Court Judge Jean Pfeiffer Leonard sentenced Salgado to the life without parole term for Markess' slaying and issued separate sentences that added up to life in prison with a minimum sentence of 117 years served before parole could be considered.

Salgado had faced the death penalty, but jurors voted to recommend that he stay in prison for the rest of his life.

Salgado is the fourth defendant in the Lancaster murder case. The other three have either been convicted or pleaded guilty. All have been identified by authorities as members of the East Side Riva gang.

The sentencing on Friday coincidentally came in the same week that jurors convicted another East Side Riva gang member in a separate, but remarkably similar slaying, which also took place in Riverside in 2002.

On Tuesday, jurors convicted a gang member in the 2002 shooting death of Anthony Sweat, 13, of Riverside, who was slain as he sat on the front porch of his home.

Ricardo Estrada Barbarin, now 32, was one of two men who witnesses said walked up to five people in the early morning of July 15, 2002, shouted a gang name and opened fire, police said. Four of the people scrambled for their lives, Sweat was fatally struck.

Sweat, like Lancaster, was black. Police also said Sweat was not a gang member.

The deaths of the two boys just a few months apart spurred demonstrations and brought community action and more cooperation between police and the city's Eastside.

Barbarin faces sentencing on Sept. 2, also before Judge Leonard in the Riverside County Hall of Justice.
