I will be going to Morehead State University this fall, and I would like to have a cell phone to talk to family, who live about 70 miles away. I was wondering if the Straight Talk phone that you can get at Wal-Mart has good service here.

The phones have prepaid cards,$35 for I believe 1000 minutes and a certain amount of web, and $45 for unlimited talk and web, per month.

Also, if there are any other cell phones that are available and have good service, I would like to know that too- But please, nothing over $45, I am on a tight budget. I'm not fond of Tracphones either; my mom has one, and they are terrible I think.

i switched to straight talk a couple months ago, it works off the AT&T towers, so it picks up really good in morehead, they have a Nokia phone that resembles a blackberry that is a super nice phone for prepaid, it has practically everything, including Wi-Fi and GPS. You cant beat 45$ a month anywhere even with a contract phone.

StraightTalk actually uses verizons network check the fine print. That's why its activate via an ESN.

This is also why you have better service than someone with ATT

Net Ten and Track phones work the best for the least amount of cash for me. But if you talk more than I do it's better to get another phone. Net Ten and such are cool because they switch lines if one is down it searches for another so they often out perform AT&T etc as it has happen to me many times. But you have to buy phone cards, no calling plan really, some people do not like that but it helps me save money.

It all depends on what type of Straight Talk phone you get. Some work on AT&T towers and some work on Verizon. Those with Sim Cards work on AT&T and those with CDMA are Verizon. I purchased the Nokia E71 Straight Talk cause I have to have a Blackberry-esque phone for work. It is used on the AT&T towers. Before that I owned the Samsung Finesse and it was a CDMA touch screen phone that worked off of the Verizon towers. Also when using my E71 it even says on certain websites 'Add to AT&T MediaMe' which you cannot do as they aren't actual AT&T phones.

As for Net 10 and Tracfone, they are good phones and service for those who do not text or use internet. I ended up shelling a lot of dough out when I owned them because I texted and used the internet as well as talking. And yes I had a calling plan. I'm not knocking them, but they just weren't for me.

A tip for those wanting the Straight Talk phone and service, the unlimited package does not mean unlimited internet service. I have had my phone shut off numerous times for going over 'the allowed usage' so be careful.

Net10 has calling plans. You can pay as you go by buying refill cards, go online and refill, refill from your phone or set up an automatic renewal. They also have a 750 minute monthly plan and an unlimited monthly plan. They also have one of the cheapest text rates, I do the pay as you go, just getting the minimum each month ($15) and my text messages are only $.03 a piece. That's way better than my darned AT&T plan on my other phone,$.20 a text, in and out.

guess I was wrong I thought straight talk was just verizon.

All these prepaid services such as tracphone and straight talk, are resellers essentially. They resell verizon or att services.

Thanks. I agree, Net Ten is the way to go and around these mountains one normally gets a strong signal when brands like AT&T are in dead zones. Just no comparing them. If one can get one of those flip top Motorola Net Ten phones they are an awesome value.

Actually, the one that I have is a Samsung, the one with the slide out Qwerty keyboard that I absolutely love! My other phone is a Motorola Razr and I always hated trying to text on it. It is handy having the two different phone, as you say, there are times when the Net10 has a signal and the AT&T doesn't.

How many minutes do you get for the 15 dollars a month? And what about texting

Pick anyone but at&t. They suck so bad. Dropped calls, calls that never ring, very limited area. I switched to Verzion and am very happy with their service.

I buy my airtime every two months. It is $30 for 300 minutes and 60 days of service time. Calls are deducted at $.10 a minute and texts are deducted at $.03 a minute. When I purchased my phone, only select models offered the 3 cent text, so check before you buy if texting is something you do a lot.

They also have these options, as well as others:

$20 for 200 minutes and 30 days
$25 for 750 minutes and 30 days if you talk or text a lot
$100 for 1500 minutes and 180 days service (that figures out to $16.67 a month for 250 minutes)

I recently stopped using AT&T and switched to Straight Talk. So far I am satisfied with it. Straight Talk seems to have fewer dropped calls, stronger signal, and much cheaper. I found a special they were having on a samsung slider with full QWERTY keyboard (factory refurb) for $20 when you purchase you first plan, cheapest plan is $30. So for $50 I figured why not try it, that was less than I was paying every month for AT&T and that was including a new phone. At this point in time I have no plans of ever getting back into a contract with any of the cell companies. I don't know what area you live in but I live in the Farmers/Cave Run Lake area and like I said, my signal in this area is better than AT&T. And it's only $30 a month!

What all does that cover? Minutes/Internet and how much are each text message?

I don't use the internet, so my Net10 is fine for now, but if it was cheap enough I might try it for my AT&T phone.
