I was hoping someone may know a good pediatric psychologist in the Morehead area? I have a cousin that just moved into the area and her child will need counseling. Any information would be helpful.

counseling or "take this pill" and go away psycology?

If you have seen Frontline's Medicating Children show you might
understand my 'tude that
"good pediatric psychologist" is
a contradiction in terms. They have
been converted into big pharma
pill pushers as that is where the
big bucks and "easy" solutions are.

he needs a strong male role model,
a "dad" or "uncle" to mentor him
most importantly he needs
certain nutrients and supplements to
counter act the inflamitory disorders
and brain shrinkage that is rampant
due to all the cheep industrialized
processed food in the die-t

Give the guy walnuts to start,
lots of omega 3, then try some
kippered fish steaks with Ritz crackers
and some liquid b-vitamins under the tongue to
see if these can reduce the irritabilities
IF he will listen to someone, try fishoil
and or codliver oil(without sharkoil some has
it raises blood pressure and volumn)

Vaccines may have injured this boy to produce
sub-cronic seizure like rages and attention deficits, also aggravated by video games and TV
really, look for the studies on this from
other countries, Italy for one, showed
THIRTY percent reduction in the hormones that
help you get restful sleep, melatonin.
Reduce or eliminate any sources of lead or
fluoride in the diet, use non-reconstituted fruit juices, no pop, and no high-fructose sweeteners, sugar is a lesser of two evils here.
England has BANNED several food colorings shown
to cause a 40% increase in hyperactivity
(and therefor agitation and perhaps rage too)
(where is our government?)

It can be tough to get compliance but the die-t
is gonna be a big factor in calming him down.
Perhaps more so than even a man role model

You can always go to Pathways I know that there is a lady there that works with children for around $200.00 an hour, but from personal experience I would not suggust her or anyone else from Pathways. However there is a woman in Mount Sterling that is really good with children and will work her price to fit your budget. I wish you the best of luck.

Are you wanting a pediatric or child clinical psychologist? Pediatric deals with more medical/health- psychology, while child clinical does more testing, and therapy.. There arent any in morehead that specialize. One of my professors at MSU has trained several psych associates at Pathways and she is a child-clinical psychologist... If you are wanting someone specializing in it i would suggest going to the american board of professional psychology and search for someone- be sure to select child clinical. I would also look up clinical counselors that specialize in children/adolescents. Depending on what the child's problem is a "good role model" wont help the problem, yes its good for them to have one, but it wont "fix" the problem. Vaccines has been tested and tested by numerous ind. companies and has shown to be totally safe. I, actually have certificates and formal training in homeopathy, but I still reconize the need for "modern medicine". You said he has alot of rage, this could be from ODD, CD, ADHD, or even depression. I would not suggest doing psychopharmaceuticals right off, do therapy and then if that doesnt help do a combination therapy of psychotherapy and psychopharmacology. If who ever does decide to do meds I suggest Dr. Michael Rieser in Lexington, Ky. He is bd certified in ch/ad psychiatry and is a very very intellegent man. He will not put you on medicine unless you absolutly need it.

Dr. Soares at the UK Clinic in Lexington, He does tele-medicine at Saint Claire Regional Medical Center. Have the child's family doctor make a referral to him. My child was over medicated when he was a patient at one of the Pathways centers. He will prescribe medication only if necessary. He still gets his psychotherapy through Pathways, at his school so that he does not have to be absence.

Soares is a behavioral pediatrician, which is better than a general pediatrician but I would suggest a bd. certified ch/ad psychiatrist. If you dont mind traveling at want to find a place that you can go to a psychiatrist and therapy at the same place there are several psychotherapists at UK that specializes in children. But, I would suggest Dr. Michael Rieser ( www.psychtrials.com - his website) as a psychiatrist if the therapist believes it is needed.

You're referring the psychiatrists. Only psychiatrists can prescribe medication. Psychologists only do therapy, behavior modification, etc. There is a huge difference. That being said, I agree psychiatry has turned into a big medication industry, bypassing therapy for the "quick fix" of a drug. As a psychologist myself, I'm disgusted by it.

Pathways in Morehead is cost-effective because they charge on a sliding scale (as low as $5 an hour depending on income). If you have a medical card, in some cases you can avoid co-pay altogether. There is a psychologist there, Cathy Hyden, who does specialize in treating children with ALL KINDS of behavioral and mental health issues. She is wonderful. Most of the therapists at Morehead pathways are an exception to the community mental health rule. For the most part, I'd recommend private practice, but the ladies at Pathways (Susan, Leslie, Sherry, and Cathy) are all wonderful psychologists and have only the client's best interest at heart. They won't push you to pursue medications as treatment unless they believe it to be necessary.

Thinking.... actually some states are now allowing psychologists to write RX. There are a few states that are doing this (last time I checked there was 3 states).

I'm actually aware of that, as I'm a psychologist myself. But thanks for pointing that out. As of right now, only doctoral (PhD) level psychologists in those three states may achieve Rx priveledges, but there is additional coursework, CEU's,and certification necessary. Due to the heavy control of KY government by the medical community, I do NOT look for that to happen here any time soon. As a psychologist, I don't want that ability, as most psychiatrists have been reduced to being pill pushers, seeing one client ever 10 minutes due to billing, HMO, and insurance issues. There isn't any therapy involved.

There is a woman in Mount Sterling named Wanda Staley..She is retired from MSU from teaching psychology. She is a very nice woman and she makes children feel very safe and comfortable. My little cousin is very troubled and she sees her, she has made a great deal of progress. I think that she is $75 a visit.
