In the past weeks I have noticed large purple triangles hanging from local trees in Fleming, Rowan, Bath and Mason counties. Does anyone know what these are for? They look like they may have a layer of sticky material on each side. I was just wondering and plus it is driving my husband crazy. LOL.

They're insect traps, specifically for a pest called the emerald ash borer. The Ohio Department of Agriculture has 75 hundred of the purple traps scattered all across the state. Once the insects infest an ash tree, it dies within five years. That represents a significant threat to Ohio's 5 billion ash trees.
The bugs come from Asia and were first discovered in Michigan in 2002. Since then they've continued to spread south. The state placed the traps where the bug has not yet been sighted. Emerald ash borers are attracted to the color purple.

If they are attracted to the purple, does it make sense to put them up and draw them this way? Or are we trying to do a sort of battle of the blue licks ambush...yes, that must be it...we put these babies up to draw the emerald ash borer down from ohio and then...uh....then we release all the mine slag pile waste and wipe em out... or maybe, we arm everyone with two 2 x 4s to smash em between. We'll surround em...yeah... that's it...surround em.

Or how about this... we convince them that the ash tree raises their cholesteral or something and get some kind of jenny craig insect to sell them on an alternative diet that we ship to them, that way they dont have to come down here and we save the ash trees.

No, wait, we could get a grant to train the squirrels to carry little cans of spray and to climb the ash tree and chemokill any emerald ash borer they run into. SWAT (Squirrels wailing at them) teams could be called in to ash trees when an emerald ash borer attacks, and we will arm the squirrels with little soaker guns filled with a deadly insecticide. No quarter, its an invasion.

The Buddha said, there is more than one way to remove the hair and outer skin layers of felines, or something like that.
