It has been a looong time since I was in High School so I am going to ask you people to answer a question for me. Who is responsible for the students that were hospitalized today? It doesn't take being an Einstein to know that those boys should not have been practicing in near 100 degree heat and high humidity. If my child was in that group there would be heck to pay. Heat stroke can be deadly or life altering. If I did have a child in that group there would be serious charges brought against whoever is responsible. Here is what I think and you tell me if I am wrong. The coach is responsible but the high and mighty Principal is the man over all of the students. Both need to be relieved of their duties if that is the case. So, who really is in charge?

They said on the news broadcast that the heat index was 84 this morning and they were given lots of water breaks My son plays for the middle school team and our practice was canceled, I was planning on keeping my son at home either way
You are sooo right heat exhaustion can cause damage to your body and it takes forever you to be able to stand the heat My son over heated when he was about 5 and he is almost 12 now and still has problems with getting to hot and of course getting sick I dont leave my child at practice because of this and if I do leave for some reason I make sure someone has my number , I know a lot of paretns arent in the position to that but inmy experience with ball teams, some parents leace their kids without no one knowing their phone number I would say that there will be a lot of questions to the coaches and principal about what happened to day and I will be curious to what happens I sure feel for those kids!!! and I agree the kids should not have been out even this morning, I was out at 8 a m and it was very hot and humid then sorry for the long post just my opinions

Concerning 6 football players taken to the hospital this morning, how ignorant are these people letting these kids practice in this kind of heat and humidity. Is football that important? As far as I am concerned practice should have been canceled all week. I think practice should only be held if humidity is under 70%.I think they learned a very scary lesson considering this happened a few years ago in another county when a football player died. Apparently people don't learn from tragedy.

The parents of these children are partly to blame, I know that I would not have let my children practice in the heat. All of the responsibility should not be placed on the school!!

You taught me something. I had no idea that after a person overheats once that is messes up their body so that it easier for them to overheat in the future. So far I think everyone that has commented is right on cue. Like you (except I will put it more bluntly) I think some parents think of school sports as a free baby sitter. At least one of the parents had some sense today, YOU. 84 is much too hot to be practicing in my opinion. Not so much the heat though, it's the humidity. The air was so heavy this morning that I had some slight trouble breathing while mowing several acres. I would have suffocated if I had to run like those kids did. It seems to me that the schools think more about winning that trophy than they do about keeping our young ones safe. What a shame and shame on them. They showed no common sense today.

Heat Index of 84 is BS! It was 84 degrees at 8:00 this morning and that does not include the humidity! The heat index (combination of temperature and humidity) had to be well over 90 at that time! I understand they want to practice, but it is not worth risking the health of the players.

Today's incident of football players being sent to hospital is not the fault of the players for not being hydrated the day before nor the parents of those players. It was due to the fact that coaches and athletic director did not adhere to the heat advisory posted and put the players health first. Don't blame the players because if they don't go to practice, they are punished or penalized by not being able to play. Don't blame the boys; blame is school personnel. Give blame where it is deserved. The players practice hard and play hard. Administration and possibly coaches should be blamed.

This is very sad thing to hear. i personally think the coaches should be either fired or suspened over this, the principle should also be fired along with the school board for making sure this kind of thing didnt happen and will never happen again. I think they also need to learn what a gym is. If they had to practice why didnt they do it in there?

According to the News, one player was kept in the Hospital over night for Observation. The news also stated that after one player became ill, the coach took measures to make sure the players were alright. If that was the case, WHY would 5 more players become overheated? I think they are really trying to down play their actions as Usual. This coach and ass. principal should have Not had those players on the field to begin with!!

That is just an awful thing to do to any kid. I think that the schools focus far too much on sports than they do on education.

Well in my honest opinion, the coach, the entire board of education as well as the school administration should be held responsible.

We were under a severe heat advisory yesterday. It was on the news at 7 AM yesterday morning because I saw it.

But yet the jackass coach still had the team out practicing.
Everyone involved in getting those kids sick should be held responsible. They should all be relieved of their duties at once as well as forced to pay any current or future financial obligations that arise from this matter.

Furthermore since the coach and everyone involved apparently like heat so well, they should be rounded up and forced to go out in 101 degree weather and run laps around the football field for 12 hours straight with no breaks or no water. Then see how THEY like it. But even that would be too good for them.

It's too bad that the parents can't sue the school system. But in the state of Kentucky there is a law that prohibits individuals from filing lawsuits against school systems. We found this out a few years ago when a relative was injured (to the extent of having bones broken) at school BY A TEACHER. We checked with an attorney and that was what we were told. Otherwise we would have owned Rowan County Schools. And the parents of the football team could have as well.

There was a case last year or year before (I think) where a football player died and the coach was sued. What do you mean that the school cannot be sued? If my child got severely hurt or killed while he/she was on the schools time the law would take care of the ones responsible or the bible would (eye for an eye)!
not true

Observer, who ever told you that you could Not sue, was an Idiot!! That is Not true, you can, and ppl have sued the school for incidents that have happen to their children. You should have talked with another lawyer, this one must have been for the school system!!
