Back around 1970-1971 - our family went on vacation up around around Mackinaw City - and our Dad took us to an attraction called "The Haunted Fort." Dad is not sure now exactly where it was located - I am guessing either Emmet County or Cheboygan County - but to this day I can find no reference to this attraction anywhere on the internet.

In any case, the Haunted Fort is a favorite childhood memory of mine - does anyone local know what happened to the Haunted Fort?

I remember seeing the crumbling facade for the Haunted Fort still standing there on US-23, near where Mill Creek Campground is, until about the late eighties, maybe early nineties. It was on the left side of the highway if you were going from Mackinaw City to Cheboygan. Over the years, trees grew in front, obstructing the view, but you could still see it. I think it was in operation until the mid eighties as I remember always asking my parents if we could stop. I have searched for info too, but no luck.

I grew up in Cheboygan and remember it being there when I was young. My sister went and told me she didn't like it. My parents never let me go to there or mystery spot. When I was old enough to go it was shut down. It must have closed down by the early eighties.

The building is still there. It has a Mill Creek Campground 1 mile sign next to it, so it is a mile North of the campground.
It is on the East side of us 23.

I googled it and did a street view to see it.
The apx. address is.

I was also searching the internet for the Haunted Fort and couldn't find it. When my family visited the Mackinaw Bridge and Fort Michilmackinac in the early 1970s, we found an advertisement flyer for the Haunted Fort and decided to go visit it. Our whole family of five started to go into the Haunted Fort, but my little baby brother started screaming and crying and my Mom and sister decided to go back to the car to stay with my little brother. They were all scared. My Dad and I went through the Fort together, and at my age (maybe 10 or so), it was pretty terrifying. I remember reading the info sign before we went in. It was a legend about a mad doctor that had conducted experiments on humans and animals. As you entered the Fort down a corridor, there was howling and screaming noises. There was a giant preying mantis inside that glowed in the dark, and various creature statues that also glowed in the dark or in black light, that were in dungeons and jail cells...apparently creatures from the doctors experiments. The worst part was when the lights went completely out and visitors had to feel their way through the darkness. You could hear a werewolf like creature howling and it'd grab visitors in the dark room, and then you could hear it going around you in secret passages to get ahead of you to grab and scare you more as you went. It seems that someone led a guided tour of the Fort. I also remember a lighted room that was similar to the Mystery Spot...it had distorted tables and other objects in a room with a sloping floor and ceiling to confuse the senses. The day that we visited, the weather was overcast with a strong cool blowing wind that added to the effect.

Thanks for the link, though the building seen next to the Mill Creek Camping sign was not the actual Haunted Fort itself. I think that building was where you paid to get in. The Haunted Fort cannot be seen anymore from the road, either due to tree growth or because the Fort was torn down.

The Haunted Fort and Haunted Mansion, on Mackinaw Island, we're owned by the step father, Shorty Cunningham, of a kid I went to school with in the 70's. When you first went in there was a room with several doors, one went through the rest of the Fort and there was a room with a picture of ghost sitting down playing cards and that was the owner, Shorty Cunningham. He was tall, he played basketball in college and his wife, my friend's mom, was totally hot! They had a big painting of her posing in the nude, Suzie Kurtz was her name, right in their living room!

I remember going through the fort in the 70's with my family and another family with whom we vacationed in Cheboygan every summer. We used to beg to visit the Haunted Fort, the Mystery Spot, and Mac Island's Hanted Theater every summer. I remember that the Fort had an emergency exit halfway through the attraction so if you were just too scared to go on, you could bail. My little sister bailed, dragging our mother with her. The room with the doors was a cool memory- I had forgotton all about that!

I remember the giant vulture that sat atop the "Haunted Fort"! Thankfully, the "Haunted Theatre" is still in operation on Mackinac Island for over 30 years! Both fond memories of my childhood visits to the straits!

I went to the Haunted fort when I was in my 5th grade summer vacation. 1978 or so. My mom pretty much started freaking out very quickly. She was dragging us through it fast and then a real guy in DR Phibes make-up stepped up towards us and I think my mom knocked him over.

I remember the hall of doors and the vulture.

About 5 years ago I called the haunted theater which at the time had a very small website. I actually asked the nice lady on the phone about the haunted fort, and she said that they, the current owners at that time owned or had some affiliation with the haunted fort back then. I cant remember the details.

I do remember the Fort and my few trips up north fondly.

You can see the praying mantis in this website picture. I think it was from the free flyer back then.

I heard about the Haunted Fort when my family and I went on a week trip to Mackinaw Island. A father and daughter told us about the experience inside and said they had trap doors and animals inside. They told us they never do it again.. We were told not to go through it because I was only 7 and my sister 9.
