MPG is not the only thing that is killing GM trucks. Its bad design. They are too small to be considered real passenger vehicles. During the recent craze of "Family Trucks" Without exception all the 4 door trucks and truck based suvs in the GM line have a second row seating as small as my wife's VW beetle. All the other major players have at least some extra-extended cab version for passenger service.(Crewmax (Toyota) Megacab (Dodge) Is it odd that the Ford F-250 Crew cab is considered the more popular edition of the F series truck? That's because the Ford F250 4 door truck has about an extra foot of room for passengers compared to the Ford F-150 4 door Crew Cab.
Hey gas matters but my 6ft Family members are in pain after a 30 minute drive in the back of these GM vehicles, thank goodness Full sized Vans still exist, more room, better MPG, just as much utility, at about a third less the price.

The GM line did not have a real 4 door truck until recently, well after the Family Truck era started. By then it was too late anyway for GM.
Soccer Moms used station wagons and so became a stigma for men as too domestic. Then the minivans were sold toward women, So men went to SUVs. Then Soccer Moms became SUV drivers so Men moved on to 4 door trucks...now we are at the "crossover" SUV. Yep, its basically a stationwagon just made to look like a truck. next!

I knew that was not my imagination. I have driven GMC pickups all my life and thought when they got a real 4 door out on the market the back seat was too dang small. Even the front seating felt a bit narrow. Who needs a 2 ft wide center console????

It was more out of sarcasm... because they are talkin in the article about how much money this will save GM but it also made the unemployment line that much longer... Not to mention the increase in goverment handouts....

I hate to see these workers loose their jobs, but, what would you have GM do? Keep paying them to crank out these gas guzzling behemoths that nobody is buying anymore? They have no choice but to shut down the plants. If anything, GM should be criticized for not seeing this trend sooner and shifting production to smaller more fuel-efficient vehicles. Once again, they're caught with their pants down. Ford and Chrysler are in exactly the same boat too - and this isn't the first time it has happened. apparently they're slow learners.
