Yes, Dogstar. I plan to attend Dr. Wolin's preliminary hearing on Monday, and I will report to this forum later in the day about the proceedings. The most recent postponement occurred because the lead detective mistakenly scheduled his vacation that week. The prosecution learned of his absence at the last minute; Dr. Wolin and attorney Blair Berk were at the defense table and ready to roll. So my gut feeling is the preliminary hearing will proceed on Monday without further delay.

His prelim trial is next week. Will any local residents be able to attend and act as reporters back to this board? That would be appreciated.
P.S. Anyone care to guess as to whether there will be yet another postponement in this saga?

Sound legal advice to Mrs. Wolin would be to hold off on any divorce proceedings until after the matter is settled.

I have not seen any indication that she wants that.

Also, he was (as far as I know) not sacked from his job.

Anybody has his address? Can show us his multi million $ home in Piedmont using Google Earth?

It would be a hard sell to say that the chat logs were /altered given that in the police interview when the detective reads excerpts of the log back to Wolin he responds by saying what he said in the chatroom wasn't appropriate however he "wasn't going to do anything". Mark my words however; I expect his lawyer to use weasel tactics worthy of Wolin's antics; she'll try to get the police interview thrown out too because weaselface first mentioned he wanted an attorney present but then continued to blather on. That interview is one of the greatest pieces of evidence there is to this case; as one contributor has mentioned he was nothing short of cagey in the interview. One thing I've wondered about, when they go to the house to seize the computer as evidence, do they do it before the accused makes bail and goes home? i.e. I wouldn't be surprised if weasel Wolin had his wife bail him out and went straight home and ditched his computer before the police arrived.

Dogstar, I am not a lawyer, but when you say the police interview was incriminating, you are forgetting something: the police interview was contingent on the arrest; the arrest was contingent on the chat logs; ergo, if the chat logs are inadmissible, the interview is inadmissible. As another contributor put it, sooner or later everything goes back to the chat logs...

But I raise another point: when Dr. Wolin first stated in the police interview that he wanted a lawyer present, why didn't the interview stop immediately? Based on the Dateline broadcast, Dr. Wolin kept talking, even though he was asked four more times if he wanted a lawyer.(Duh, he already said he did!)

We don't know exactly what transpired after Dr. Wolin initally requested a lawyer present, but it seems to me the interview was officially concluded at that moment. Why wasn't Dr. Wolin taken to the booking station immediately thereafter? Did the police interviewer prompt Dr. Wolin to keep talking? Comments?

Jasmin, Good arguement. I'm not a lawyer either and I don't know if throwing out the chat logs deems everything that follows inadmissable. It shouldn't in my opinion. Plus I don't know whether someone asking for a lawyer means that you can't talk to them further even though they then change their mind and say they're willing to talk without a lawyer. I do believe that they don't need the police interview to make the case given the chat logs. I also can't see how they won't be accepted as evidence. All you have is one fired NBC executive alleging that they may have been modified and no proof substantiating it. Plus we heard someone discuss the safeguards in place to prevent same from occuring. What worries me is that Wolin's dream team defense will pull an OJ Simpson defense and throw out everything but the kitchen sink alleging conspiracy, setup, etc. to get him off. Wolin admitted in the police interview that what he said wasn't appropriate so there is little doubt that he did it; in my opinion the only way he can get off is on a technicality, which would be a miscarriage of justice. I would like to hear about the computer seizure question I asked before. i.e. doesn't the allowance of Wolin to go home or even phone home from the police station allow either himself or his wife the opportunity to ditch the computer at home or his office before the police show up?

I just went to the Sonoma County Superior Court web site where they post the next business day's cases. Dr. Wolin's preliminary hearing is still set for Monday morning...

The question of if and when Dr. Wolin's personal computer was seized would seem to be a critical one. There were 29 men netted in the Petaluma sting. In a perfect world there would have been 29 officers with 29 search warrants ready to seize 29 computers at each moment of arrest. I doubt that law enforcement has that kind of resources. Hopefully we'll find out Monday when the prosecution presents its evidence.

Jasmin, your desire to dismiss these very serious charges against Wolin is very disturbing. First of all, concerning his asking for a lawyer, Wolin is shown asking for a lawyer, and then changing his mind and deciding to talk. When he asks for a lawyer, the police detective says that he then has to conclude the interview. If Wolin then changes his mind and says he wants to talk, is the detective supposed to say "No, you already said that you want a lawyer."? No! Wolin is free to change his mind. Forget about using this excuse. If it were a valid defence, then his lawyer would have already picked up on it. The fact that she didn't tells us that this line of argument has no merit.

Sam, I do believe that Dr. Wolin intended to have sex with the decoy, and I am as appalled as the next person at his apparent egregious behavior. But everything we know about this case is based on a Dateline broadcast that has been edited to a frenzy and packaged for our viewing consumption. I'm interested to know what happened between those edits. btw, Dr. Wolin's attorney Blair Berk is a he, not a she...

HEY DAGGER63. Get a life-you spend too much time on here. "change name wrote:
THAT'S NOT HIS FATHER!!!!!!!!!! MOVE ON!!!
Are you related to him somehow?" DONT YOU THINK IT SEEMS A BIT SILLY TO FIND MAURICE FATHER ON HERE? I CAN UNDERSTAND LOOKING FOR HIS WIFE, BUT THEN ASSUMING AN ARTICLE IS THIS GUYS FATHER? THAT IS GOING A LITTLE TO FAR, ALONG WITH THE "BOTH ARE JEWS" COMMENT. AND NO -ASKING HIM IF HE IS RELATED TO THAT GUY SOMEHOW IS A LITTLE BIT OVERBOARD FOR YOU EVEN.

ATTENTION EVERYBODY-GET THE LATEST EDITION OF ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE ISSUE #1032 AUG 9, 2007. IT HAS GUNS AND ROSES ON THE COVER AND A VERY INTERESTING ARTICLE ON "DATELINE TO CATCH A PREDATOR/PERVERTED JUSTICE"

ALSO DATELINE CHRIS HANSEN JUST DID AN EPISDOE ON PEOPLE WHO STEAL IPODS. Go figure.

NOW HERE IS SOMETHING TO DO YOU KNOW WHAT. I have a very good friend. We have known each other since 1991. Now he is divorced with a 6 year old daughter. He and his ex share custody. For the past few months, my friend has been allways wanting me to come to his apartment and hangout. His 6 year old daughter is allways there. So she knows me and we interact. Please tell me, does this make me a predator? He keeps on inviting me over. SOmetimes I decline, saying they need quality time together. So am I a up and coming child molestor or what? DAGGER63 YOU ARE SO WRONG ABOUT PEOPLE, ESPECALLY WHEN YOU ARE SAYING STUFF LIKE "YOU NEED MEDICATION" AND "YOU NEED TO TALK TO YOUR THERAPIST" along with others trying to find out if that news story is about Maurice's father.

Wolin court date postponed again

Once again, the court date for Piedmont oncologist-researcher Maurice Wolin has been postponed.
Wolin, 49, is accused of attempting lewd behavior on a minor. He and 28 other Bay Area men were arrested in a sex-sting operation last August at a Petaluma house. The men are accused of propositioning girls on the Internet, then going to a house to have an intimate "date" with an underage girl.
The "girls" at the house were young-looking actresses; the girls on the Internet were police decoys.
The men were all arrested shortly after they arrived at the house.
Wolin's preliminary hearing set for Tuesday and Wednesday in Sonoma County Superior Court in Santa Rosa is now scheduled for Aug. 6 and Aug. 7, a Sonoma County District Attorney spokeswoman said. Prosecutors on June 13 filed a motion for continuance because a key witness was unavailable, the spokeswoman said.
The hearing is expected to be in Dept. 14. At the hearing, witnesses will provide testimony or evidence in open court. Judge Raima Ballinger will then decide if there is enough evidence to go to trial.
Wolin's court dates have been postponed numerous times, due to the illness of the judge, of the defense attorney and other reasons. Wolin's Southern California attorney Blair Berk, who also represents numerous Hollywood celebrities, had no comments on the case this week.
Wolin and the others' actions were caught on tape on NBC Dateline's "Catch a Predator" show, which has aired several times.

The sting operation was coordinated by the Petaluma and Santa Rosa police, Sonoma County Sheriff's, and Perverted Justice, a nationwide organization that monitors online chat rooms and Web sites.
Wolin's case has captured worldwide attention on chat rooms and blogs, with comments from India, Belgium, the Netherlands and around the country. Some writers feel no mercy, while others sympathize with the doctor's family. One person writes: "Dr. Wolin helped cure me of leukemia at UCLA Medical Center some 16 years ago....It is indeed sad that such has befallen him. I cannot make excuses for him, but as far as I am concerned, this man is a good man."
As a result of the charges, Wolin was banned from practicing medicine as of Nov. 29 by the state medical board, by court order. He has worked as a cancer researcher and oncologist in Southern California, the Bay Area and elsewhere.
Joan Risse, chief Sonoma County deputy district attorney, said 13 defendant's cases have been settled out of the 29. Those who pled guilty to attempting to commit a lewd and lascivious act upon a child under age 14, a felony, are: Norbert Avalos, Juan Carlos Gutierrez, Henry Guzman, Aminder Singh, Valkunth Soundararajan, Jonathan Stemen, Michael Vestal and Gopichand Pai.
Steven Cartlidge and Wai Kit Cheuk both pled to an attempt to annoy or molest a child, a misdemeanor that can bring up to one year in jail, Risse said. Jaime Mendieta pled to attempted sexual battery, a misdemeanor. The cities of residence of the men were not available.
Mohammed Aksoum of Walnut Creek entered a no-contest plea to the same charges as Wolin, was given formal probation and nine months in jail. Marine Sgt. Yancy Wallace was released to the custody of the U.S. Marines where he will face court-martial proceedings. One suspect, Pulkit Mathur, is at large with a $50,000 warrant outstanding. Those convicted must register as sex offenders.
The other 16 cases are set for jury trials or preliminary hearings. Risse said the cases are assigned by alphabet to various courtrooms where, for a variety of factors, some cases are resolved quicker than others.
