He was going to attend but then realized that nobody likes him so he decided to stay home and write more nonsense about illegal immigrants. That's all that really concerns him anyways.

If this city really gave a rats arse about alternate transportation then we would have more greenways, sidewalks and bike lanes. Sorry, but making a once a year publicity stunt out of alternate transportation then doing nothing the other 51 weeks of the year to actually make alternate transportation a reality just don't cut it in my book!

The city does, in fact, give a rats ass. Thanks to the hard work of community organizers and staff the city has been actively improving its public transit, bicycle, and pedestrian infrastructure.

We already have the bike-lockers in queue, the transit master plan is due late summer, traffic signal sensitivity has been tweaked at key intersections, shareows have been laid on certain roads, and, sidewalks are being built.

It will take a while, but don't blame the city just because changes aren't happening overnight.

I've lived here - in the city - for over 15 years and I have not seen any of those things! When I lived in Greensboro I rode my bike to work everyday on the greenway.

Riding the bike to work in this town is dangerous - it's not a plausible reality!

Like to see them drive those things down I-40 heading home at night. Do a little bit of grocery shopping, take the kids to school... lol So stupidly un-practicle for the majority of those who live and work here.

And good luck making it home alive with all the illegals who can't drive a straight nail into a hole in the ground much less a vehicle.

Mumps was likely down there someplace yelling about how bad this was and how the city needed better leadeship like himself as the mayor.

Mumps is always in the dumps if he is not the focal point of the event or talk.

Tell you what. I ride streets of Asheville on a mountain bike set up for the street, and I have already had a few close calls with motorists. I use the sidewalks when I can, even if I have to walk the bike on the sidewalk. When there are pedestrians on the sidewalks, I stay away from them and don't ride near them.

For all practical purposes there are NO bike lanes around Asheville. For someone who was spoiled by Los Angeles and the beach cities like Hermosa, Manhattan, Redondo, Venice, and Santa Monica, Asheville is not a bicyclist's city.

Last time I was on Lexington Avenue, a car in a rush to get out of a parking space grazed the bike and me. I was fully lighted, but the motorist was in too much of a hurry. All I could do was yell but it wasn't enough. It was lucky all I got was a bruise and a scrape.

The city needs to mandate that reflective gear be worn by the complete idiots that ride in the dark, wearing all dark clothing.

There is one that rides on Charlotte st that the wife sees about every morning (she goes to work real early) and she says he is almost always in all black and just can be seen.

If you know this idiot, or are this idiot, wear white or get a reflective vest.

And the mayor on an electric assist bike, guess she'll be driving the SUV to work tomorrow.

Bellamy needs to eat mo beans! Probably wouldn't need the electric assist. Just make sure Robin Cape is riding behind her.

If bicyclists gave a rat's *** about their safety they would not get on a bicycle anywhere in this area!

We probably agree that Asheville has a long way to go before we are a truly multi-modal city. I'm only taking issue with the allegation that the city doesn't care about these issues.

They do, and the evidence is there for those who care to look.

Maybe I notice it more than you since I bike and use the bus to get around town - it's my primary mode of transportation.

So much for your theory that it's not a "plausible reality".

This is Funny, from the Article -

"Riding on an electric assisted bicycle, Mayor Terry Bellamy sped out of the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce parking lot and down Montford Avenue this morning, leading a small group of cyclists in a five-mile route around downtown Asheville to kick off the 19th annual Strive Not to Drive event."

So she was driving a "Green Moped" that is what a moped is. And if they wanted to promote ride instead of drive then shouldn't she of been on a BIKE not a electric bike. Im so glad my tax dollars are used ever so wisely.

Asheville the land of Symbolism over substance.
