"The group does not approach national chains about considering locations in the downtown, Shannahan said. Still, all vital information is passed on to them if requests are made, he said. The BBC is focused on trying to provide the "Vermont downtown experience," he said."

It's thinking like Shannahan's that will never allow for the resurgence of downtown America.... Aunt Bessie's overpriced pie shop or Gertude's stale chocolates are not the drawing card which make for his "Vermont Downtown Experience."

National chains bring with them large advertising and marketing bucks which not only promote them, but also the entire downtown area.... Does Shannahan think the success of the Jelly Mill and their many expansions in the early 70's were not due to all of those outlet shops down the street???? Take away those outlet shops and it would look like downtown Hoosick Falls on a Sunday afternoon, DEAD... I suggest you run that one by the Lewis and Cadoret families.... Clint thought he was a retail guru with the success of the Jelly Mill in Manchester and tried to expand his business in Shelburne by building his own strip mall which I believe was called Jelly Mill Commons... Within one year the place went bust for one reason and one reason only, there was not an anchor store to draw in shoppers and that was in the mid 80's..... I also look at places like the Vermont Country Store in Weston where they screw tourist with prices out of this world...$7 for a bag of friggn popcorn to munch as you browse through their other overpriced crap??? Apparently this place is trying to generate sales per sq ft that are in line with Wally World,$5000.... NOT a good idea to project to tourist....

I suggest the BBC start courting these national retailers before Walmart kills off the remainder
of downtown Bennville... Anchor stores compliment mom and pop stores and don't destroy them like the beast of Bentonville, Arkansas...

Something else that is popping up across the Northeast is downtown, year round farmers markets, open 4 to 7 days per week, in buildings which have remained vacant for years.... This is a great tool for those seeking to start their own businesses but aren't quite sure how there products or services will sell or they just don't have the capital to gamble on store leases and other overhead expenses.... I'm talking everything from Grama's home made jam to piano lessons to a dual quad manifold for a 57 Corvette....

I'm not a great fan of Mike Bethel but I have to agree with him here, these clowns with the BBC are all out to lunch and are trying their very best to prove the validity of Einstein's definition of insanity by doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results...

No big chain stores in relevance to sq footage, just nationally known retail outlets like in Manchester... As it stands right now, anyone new to the area is gonna want as close to Wally World as possible which only adds to the problem of any downtown revitalization.... They never should have allowed it... No problem though Stevie, give them 5 years or so and we'll be able to buy the entire downtown area for pennies on the dollar at the Sheriffs sale....

We might be sailing down to the Narragansett Bay area to visit some friends at Brown University.... What the hell is this NYLO place people are talking about and is it a good place to whore down for a few days???? Looks a bit FU FU Peter Pan to me.... I still can't get at my house in Salvo to do the repairs on damage from Irene because that section is still under an evacuation order till they repair the breech in the road and finish installing a temporary bridge at Mirlo Beach... Charlie is getting restless with the local yockles of NC and I have to get him outta here before he winds up being deported back to Germany... Charone and his wife are in Vancouver so we have been on the prowl, heading out to Alexandria tomorrow night...

Look out Northeast, Hurricane Alex and Charlie are on the way! You pegged it, NYLO is for the younger 21 to 30 crowd filled with girly man types. The bar packs out on the weekends but not your type of crowd. It's an old warehouse building they turned into a hotel with a restaurant and club. You guys would last about 5 minutes and someone would piss you off and end up knocked out on the floor! RI is not a great place to party....that's why I fly out on the weekends, wrong crowd here. What's in Alexandria?

I figured that was FU FU from just seeing the bar stools and other retro Peter Pan shit.... Got an old bud who is in the engineering dept at Brown.... Alexandria??? I have the keys to a condo at Marina Towers just off the GW Parkway, edge of Old Town....
I used to live there in the early 80's....

As it stands right now we are staying here because they announced the road to Hatteras Island is going to open on Monday... Not looking forward to seeing the damage that was done to the house
and I'm sure the entire downstairs is infested with mold... That section was off limits to everybody until repairs to RT 12 were complete..... No way of getting building materials there..

No, they're too old for him when they get to high skool.

Check the boys room at the middle school for the Marky peep hole.
